Hey,
You want to book your hotel as soon as possible
because they fill up really fast. Try to stay as
close to Esplanade or the French Quarter as possible.
If not there, then the Garden District or Uptown are
nice.
Make sure you go to Checkpoint Charlies, and on the same
side of the street past the fire station, there is a thai
restaurant called Siam Cafe. The next doorway past the cafe
(only by about 5 feet), is actually a long dark brick
hallway. Go down this hallway then turn left and go up
the stairs and there's a bar up there. DOnt miss their
Monday Nite 2 for 1 Sake. That is my favorite place. Its
called the Dragons Den.
Another place absolutely not to miss is Lafittes Blacksmith
SHop Bar. Its on Bourbon St. away from all the neon and insanity.
I think its probably around the 900 or 1000 block or so. It
basically looks like its about to fall down. Its really really
old.
If you can find Bryan Lee and the Jump Street 5 playing anywhere
I recommend seeing them. Bryan Lee is blind and has been playing
for years and years and years. They used to play at the Old
Absinthe house Bar before it was closed and turned into a daiquiri
shop.
DOnt forget to walk through the Fauborg Marigny while you are there
and take the streetcar up to Uptown and the Garden District.
St. Charles has lots of mansions, and its cool to see, but if
you like things a little more real, its nice to venture off to
Magazine St. and Prytania. I lived in this blue victorian house
on Magazine at 1st St. across from a little po'boy shop. They
have since painted my house pink, but anyways... That neighborhood
is amazing. Houses are really really beautiful.
Tipitinas is a really famous for a good reason old club/bar
at 500 Napoleon. Im not sure what its like these days, but Ive
seen the Meters, Cowboy Mouth, Dash Rip Rock, Fugazi, George
Porter and many many
other random artists there.
Oh, and try to find Fats Dominos house while you are in New Orleans.
Its not really hard to find, just ask someone but its cool to stand
outside his house and know that Fats Domino lives there. ANd he painted
some cool stuff outside if its sstill there.
Definitely take the side streets and see the random stuff.
There is a voodoo shop on Rampart in the Quarter that is pretty
cool. THe thing about New Orleans, is there is tons of random
stuff. If you keep your eyes open, You'll have a great time!
Ill let you know if I think of more stuff.
