Michael,
I think Minidisc is definitely the way to go for that. However, I would lean
towards a decent portable deck. Why? Because with a portable deck you can
bring it to gigs to record your sets, bring a MD with cuts off of 20 CDs you
didn't feel like bringing with you, etc. You can get a nice portable MD
recorder for less than 2 bills if you look around (the Sharp we use at work
we got off of ONSALE.COM for $149). I use a MD, my friends use MD, and our
office uses MD. The discs are cheap and easy to get and as long as you set
it up right the quality is VERY good. For more info on this very topic check
out alt.audio.minidisc.

Subject: master making / recording setups?

Greetings all. Sorry if this is a bit off topic but i'm at the end of my
rope and i imagine there are a couple people out there that have/had the
same needs i do. I am trying to find the best and cheapest way of making a
master to dub tapes tapes from (I want to upgrade the sound quality of my
recordings since right now i dub from the same cassette over and over).
Probably one of the best ways is to just buy a computer with a good sound
card and a burner. But since that's down the road a bit for me, i'm trying
to find something cheaper (so obviously a DAT's out too). I'm looking for
something in the $200-400 range.

I can get a home MiniDisc deck for around $250. Is the difference in sound
quality from CD quality significant? My purpose is to go to tape anyway. Is
this a bad idea to use MiniDiscs for this purpose?

I've seen a Pioneer PDR-509RW for around $400. Is the sound quality i gain
from recording to CD worth the $150 difference from the MD? Are there
disadvantages to having a home CD recorder of this kind (for someone with my
intentions)?

And to all you Djs out there, what are some of your setups like? What are
some of the ways you have found best to deal with the age old mixed tape
dilemma? What equipment have you found to be the best value/quality to suit
your needs in the area of producing high quality promo tapes at home?

Thanks for your time!
aRgo

PS. cassette deck recommendations are welcome too since i am upgrading that
too. Should i go for one of those decks with the fancy porcelain cassette
housing?
