My 2 cents (pence?) for the holidaze

Haven't dealt with email too much lately, so here are some musical
highlights of my vacation starting almost a month ago.

Went to London, had no luggage for 4 days, so when it arrived I was all
riled up and went to the Fridge, which is a lot of fun if you like trance.

Checked out the frequently mentioned Gilles Peterson's night at Bar Rumba
[w/ Ben Wilcox and James Lavelle] and had a superb time except that I
couldn't stop dancing.

Caught the Cinematic Orchestra at the Jazz Cafe
which put a huge smile on my face until my so-called friends made me leave
early to try and catch the last train (which we missed).

New Years was Cream 2000 at Brixton Academy, opened by Norman aka Fatboy
Slim (8 pm! You can bet there were some disappointed latecomers) who
exceeded my skeptic expectations and rocked. He was ON. Sasha was the
other big name, far from this list but he was great until he had the stage
manager clear the stage, and what's the use of getting a crew pass if you
can't dance on stage?

Flew to NYC and my best friends's lover took (dragged?) us to Webster Hall
which I thought would be terrible and it was, although I talked to the dj
and the music mysteriously improved. His girlfriend informed me that they
ask him to play boring repetitive house (?!) but he'd rather not. [side
note: big club = bad music, little club = good music - why is this?]

Convinced my friends to go to Turntables on the Brooklyn Side and had a
fantastic time. I don't know who was spinning upstairs when we got there
but he started out with groovy, downtempo beats and just got funkier until
we were too sweaty and had to go downstairs. Good thing, because
Nickodemus was Amaaaazing. He took latin, jazz, african, hip-hop (and
more) tunes, beats and rythms and smushed them together into a lovely
melted music sandwich that saw a steady migration from upstairs. The venue
was beautiful, the host was a sweetie, and I actually ran into someone I
knew (a big deal for me since I don't live in NYC). Five thumbs up. Or
stars. Something.

Enough.
