Hey guys, what's up, just picked up the new d'angelo. still listenin, but
it is such a lush affair. it sounds nice. very 70s r&b vibe, harmonies,
rhythms and the overall feel of the album..... since i have the left and
right single, i didn't quite catch the real words to left and right...its is
a little different than the radio edit, in the lyrical content and the
actual track. i am really feeling the spanish joint with roy hargrove...it
is nice.
so the scoop, it is a very mellow album, really funky, and the beats are
nice kind of a drop step in each song... really nice grooves. gives me some
airs of the last tony toni tone album, house of music, know what i mean? a
musical accomplishment. the lyrics are all in the book: lots of pictures of
him jammin with his friends, or dancing or hanging out....gives a
glimpseinto his personality. d'angelo sounds better than ever! The album
has 13 tracks and runs about 80 minutes, lots of great freestyle and
instrumental breaks. as they said, they did not really edit the songs a
lot, so it feels really live.
as for the songs: track by track
playa playa: this track seems fun to make. a nice funky element. like a
party song but not jus a great groove. no d'angelo vocal gymnastics, but
lots of the layering and nice horns. the chorus andthe verses flow together
in a cool way!
devil's pie: i know everyone has heard it: premier beats and interesting
lyrics
left and right: the token d'angelo style party track, and i'm sure eveyone
has heard it. check out the real lyrics. but i do have to say i think a
few changes in the cd happened before it got released in the US.
the line: it is all about the lyrics but this is an awesome track. it is
all about d'angelos feelings on this record.
send it on: beautiful track, a nice love song...in the trend of the lush
beats, strings and vocals....
chicken grease: getting sick of all the slow songs? this is the funky track,
and my favorite dance track!
one mo'gin: kinda bluesy, think smoky bar, with a nice blues-jazz band in
the corner....and your ex-girl/boy friend walks in...
the root: i love the beat and d'angelos vocalization and a slightly
unconventional chorus..... you just took a step into our favorite era of
prince.
spanish joint: this track is awesome....on preliminary listen, this just
might be my favorite, just for the groove........ and the percussion is a
nice afro-cubantype of beat: get out those dancing shoes
feel like making love: minus lauryn, a nice cover.......
greatdayndamornin/booty: the title is a little interesting: like higher but
not nice gospelly vocals for parts and still makes your head nod
untitled: well as you all know this is an awesome prince inspired
track....it ends to son. i could have used a good 12 or 13 minutes!
africa: the last track. the last track on a d'angelo cd is always a sad
affair: because you realize the cd is over.......and the inevitable has
occured. but this is a nice "float on" type of track...slightly magical
but definitely funky but reminds me of things floating around a craddle, a
great track!
so what do i think.............. brown sugar will not be making a return in
a very very long time this cd makes it seem almost average....... well
average for d'angelo. all the tracks are on a even level of amazement and
wonderment, so pick this cd up now!
