They're neither - it's just a name for a project that DJ Shadow and Cut
Chemist worked on together. They played a gig in San Francisco called the
"45 Sessions" that was a showcase of their old funk and soul collections,
mostly 7-inch 45's from the 70's on back mixed on 4 decks. The first
performance of "Brainfreeze" was actually their rehearsal for this SF show,
they recorded three takes and picked the best of the lot. That was released
in an edition of 1000 CD's that they pressed up themselves - the CD just
says "DJ Shadow/Cut Chemist - Brainfreeze - A Nonstop Live Mix of Strictly
45's and Exercise in Vinyl Destruction." They never intended to officially
release it; instead it was meant to be sold at their shows and in person as
a special release for their fans. A few were sold here in LA at Aron's
Record store, only to be snapped up all by one greedy fan and sold for a
ridiculous amount on EBay. Problem is that kids in Idaho don't really have
a chance to see Chemist/Shadow, so they were the ones paying through the
nose for this one. The only other Brainfreeze performance took place last
week here in LA, where they played a show at the El Rey w/ Numark, Z-Trip,
and others to basically recreate the record live. It's all old-school funk,
soul, and novelty/spoken word records with a lot of tracks you'd prolly
recognize as having been sampled a million times. If you're interested in
this one, best bet would be trying to pick up a CDR or dubbed copy...Brock
PS - The whole Brainfreeze title is kind of a joke relating to 7-11, a chain
of convenience stores here in the States. They sell these iced Slurpees
that when gulped down by any overly eager seven year old result in a painful
phenomenon known as "brainfreeze", aka "ice cream headache." The disc has a
picture of Chemist and Shadow wearing green 7-11 uniforms and standing in
front of Slurpee machines. One of the 45's they mix in is a silly
promotional 7-inch that the convenience store chain gave away during the
70's called "Dance the Slurp." It's this cheezy tune set to the beat of a
slurping straw noise that you get when you hit the bottom of the cup and
there's no more Slurpee to be had :)
Also just realized - there's whole feature on this one online - the LA
Weekly ran it the week of the show, written by Oliver Wang:
