hi everyone,
Here's this week's scoop. Thanks to all those who made it to last
Saturday's SOULAR system, and our special co-presentation with the FLIRT
crew of a night featuring solid UK Garage. The eve was packed, sweaty, and
very happy. Thanks for making it happen.
TOMORROW, we welcome Washington, D.C.'s THUNDERBALL, whose dub-drenched
'Ambassadors of Style' album is out now on THIEVERY CORPORATION's 18th
Street Lounge (ESL) label. There has been a lot of interest in this show,
and we look forward to seeing you out! Full details follow below.
The first TWO people that hit me back with a reply to this e-note, saying
that you'd like to join us for Thunderball will have a guest list spot
reserved for you and a friend. Apologies, but these four spots are all that
I can offer for this show. Write me quick! :-)
Next Saturday, July 29th, SOULAR system joins forces with top-notch T.O.
label Public Transit Recordings to celebrate the release of LAL's video for
the song "Corners." LAL will perform LIVE, and PTR producer/ DJ's Moonstarr
and Logic will join Sassa'le and myself. Again, full details below.
August will bring many a special guest, including Abacus, NYC's Derrik
Foxx, Codex performing live, and DJ/vocalist Stach. I'll keep you posted.
Thanks once again for your interest and support. As always, if you'd prefer
not to be on this list, just let me know and off ye shall go. Ciao for now.

SATURDAY JULY 22: tommygrl proudly welcomes dubbed out Washington D.C. duo
THUNDERBALL in their first Canadian appearance. THUNDERBALL's Steve Raskin
and Sid Barcelona met while studying graphic design, quickly bonding via
their similar vision for design, music and sound. Raskin was a member of
infamous D.C. indie-rock band Edsel, and also designed album artwork for
friends and fellow-scenesters such as Girls Against Boys, and the Dischord,
Giant Step, and Teenbeat labels. Barcelona had his eyes and ears attuned to
the work of directors and music-makers such as Jean Luc Goddard and John
Cage, their creations inspiring his own experiments with ambient music and
the building of a studio that Thunderball now call home.
With their punk rock backgrounds, design experience, and appreciation for
blissed out beats 'n bass, Raskin and Barcelona later met and bonded with
another D.C. duo who would soon become friends and label-bosses - THIEVERY
CORPORATION. Three 12" singles and many contributions to compilations
released on Thievery's Eighteenth Street Lounge later, Thunderball recorded
the full-length, dub-steeped sonic adventure AMBASSADORS OF STYLE. Catch
them while you can, on a bill also featuring Denise, Sassa, and guest
Andrew Allsgood. $12 at the door for an eve of dub * downtempo * beats *
breaks and d&b.
SATURDAY JULY 29 :
Public Transit Recordings and SOULAR system at B-Side celebrate with LAL,
in honour of their first video. LAL, known for their unique approach to
urban music, will screen the video and perform live. Shooting a video was
an unexpected treat; "It sort of dropped in our laps," vocalist Rosina
says. "When we got together with Rob, we shared a musical vision for
'Corners.'" In the video, director ROB PILICHOWSKI tells the story of a
typical urban street corner through the eyes of a young woman. Best known
for his work on the opening credits for David Cronenberg's film Existenz,
Rob threw his energies into producing the subtle yet engaging video.
Vocalist ROSINA and producer MURR make up the duo LAL. Together, they
combine jazz, soul, hip hop, and east-Indian grooves to make a unique new
sound. Both are rising stars on the urban music scene - Murr, part of
Juno-award-winning hip hop crew Da Grassroots, has worked with Esthero and
the Dream Warriors, while Rosina has collaborated with house producer
Abacus. Together they have performed across Canada and the United States.
LAL will screen the video for the first time at 12:00 a.m. after they
perform songs from their forthcoming Public Transit Recordings EP,
'Corners.' LAL's LIVE show is a blend of their philosophy, incorporating
eastern and western styles of music. Joining Rosina and Murr on stage are
Prithi on the Veena, and Keith on the electric guitar. The audience should
be prepared for some surprises.
PTR producer/DJ's Moonstarr and Logic will make guest DJ appearances,
joining SOULAR system residents Denise Benson (CKLN's Mental Chatter) and
Sassa'le (CKLN's Version Excursion). Doors open 10pm, with cover being $8
at the door, $6 for those with a valid TTC transfer from the day. Show your
support for local talent!
