yup yup. and smaller cities offer so much
opportunity. big places can be intimidating and hard
to break into, but i've seen small groups of people,
maybe just one or 2, completely change the face of a
scene in places like pittsburgh, indianapolis,
columbus, miami, orlando, etc. when i lived in
pittsburgh i found that it was a little more wild-eyed
and crazy just under the surface, a little more raw
and adventurous than what i'd been used to, growing up
outside of philadelphia--which is not enormous, but
pretty big, with an "east coast" chip on its shoulder.
in smaller places there's not so much connection to
any status quo, it's more fluid, more is possible
sometimes. i loved the rave scene in
pittsburgh..small, friendly, appreciative of what they
had, great/creative venues, everyone knew everyone,
old schoolers got respect, kids would ask them for
advice...i never could get into it when i moved back
to philly.
i've learned never to insult a city till you really
know it. smaller places have secrets, secrets they're
not willing to give awy till you've done some work to
find them. yeah, small cities can be really *really*
frustrating and unpredictable, and i love where i
live, but if you look, you can almost always find
something to love and a huge gap that you could fill
in all by yourself if you have the initiative. and the
resources, and lots of luck. ;)
