That's a f---ing tough question. I find myself more of a fan of songs or albums than of artists. Nonetheless, at the moment I'll go with something like this:
Horace Silver
Stevie Wonder
John Coltrane
Funkadelic
Cibo Matto
The Clash
Prince Paul
The Beatles
James Brown
Charley Patton (early blues guitarist -- check out http://allmusic.com/cg/x.dll?p=amg&sql=B486 -- the all music guide page on him ... the seed of r&b and rock: "The second, and equally important, part of Patton's legacy handed down to succeeding blues generations was his propensity for entertaining. One of the reasons for Charley Patton's enormous popularity in the South stems from him being a consummate barrelhouse entertainer. Most of the now-common guitar gymnastics modern audiences have come to associate with the likes of a Jimi Hendrix, in fact, originated with Patton. His ability to "entertain the peoples" and rock the house with a hell-raising ferociousness left an indelible impression on audiences and fellow bluesmen alike. ")
One other thing ... why do some people make top ten lists with more than ten artists on them? The challenge of narrowing it to ten makes it fun in a way.
Peace and love,
JahLuv

Subject: Your top ten artists, any musical style
Hey. I know these types of threads occur constantly and get to be an annoyance to some of the older listees who've seen em' many times over, but I'm curious as to what everyone listens to most, which artists you place above everyone else. So, how's about y'all list your top ten favorite artists. It don't matter which musical style. Anyway, here's mine, in no particular order
1-Frank Zappa
2-Frank Sinatra
3-Tom Waits
4-Billie Holiday
5-Miles Davis
6-John Coltrane
7-Marvin Gaye
8-Parliament-Funkadelic
9-John Zorn
10-I guess it's a tie between Ella, Sly, Afghan Whigs, Marley, KISS, Aretha, Piazolla, Morricone, and Herbie Hancock!! Each of these artists get played at least a few times a week.
