Hey AJlist posse,
I just wanted to drop a note on an album that has been mentioned previously.
I picked up a new, legit reissue of RAMP's "Come Into Knowledge" and
it is completely blowing my mind. Original issue was in 1977 on ABC
and it has been a serious collectors' piece for quite a while. There
have been several dodgy reissues, but this one's for real.
Roy Ayers produced the album, and wrote many of the cuts. Excellent
vocals from Sharon Matthews and Sibel Thrasher.... It's the missing
link for any Roy Ayers fan, has a similar feel to mid/late Ayers
material (ala "...Sunshine"). Nine tracks and nearly every one of
them is excellent. I especially dig "Daylight", the source for the
"Bonita Applebaum" (by ATCQ) melody. "Give it" is a total uptempo
MONSTER that leaps between stuttered funk beats and slinky disco.
Smashing... It also features a cool cover of "Everybody Loves the
Sunshine" without the right hand of the melody. Keeps enough of the
original to be recognizable, but changes enough to be interesting.
Buy it buy it buy it. If Roy is your thang, this is it. It's a
soul-drenched masterpiece. I'm sure that Dusty Groove has plenty of
them if your local shop doesn't.
Cheers,
.aaron shinn
ps: finally got a copy of Zapp's "More Bounce..." and it keeps my
booty movin'... Hell yeah.
