    It originally referred to train enthusiasts who would sit at train stations
    literally watching trains go by. Some would write down the time that they
    saw a given train go by.

    I first saw the term being adopted by the NME in the late 80s to also refer
    to music enthusiasts who exhibited similar detail oriented, anal behaviour
    with regard to music.
