    hey,

just got back from the fantastic four + one more show (rootdown@gabah on thursdays). oh my (insert favorite deity here)!!!
the fantastic 4 are cut chemist, nu-mark (both of jurrasic 5 fame), marvski (filet of soul, also the brother of mumbles--aceyalone/ubiquity producer), dj dusk (kpfk/ucla extension/ritual events) + dj shadow!! kinda like a mini-"brain freeze" (minus the slurpees). represent when they come to your town--or you'll be sorry!!

it was brian cross' (hiphop photographer aka b+) birthday, and it definitely felt like a party!! they all traded off rocking a few records (between 4 decks) for a while with the occasional pyrotechnics display by the dj coming on. the climax was chemist & shadow on the 2x4 action. they re-created "lesson 6" live to start the set off, and then built a few more tracks from assorted pieces--there were some mistakes, but the crowd was very forgiving (we were having a great time, y'know)!! at one point the crowd helped cut chemist count the beat in (to re-start a routine) when his needle skipped. the various djs had no problem w/grabbing a mic and talking to the crowd (or goofing, like marvski--singing the organ lick from krs' "step into a world" over blondie's "rapture"). it was basically a hiphop party, all the djs were rocking 80% party music (as opposed to abstract or obscure stuff) and jumping around in time, with both hiphop & rare-groove/funk stuff. dusk played a fun spanish remake (i don't know the artist) of "ain't no stopping us now" shortly before the night ended w/a little reggae (they hadn't played any all night) and a funk break that cut chemist had synced to a "ring the alarm" (tenor saw) and "bam bam" (sister nancy) mix.

    fun was had by all...
