The man behind Ping Pong is a multi-instrumentalist named Shawn Lee, who
had a project band back around 1994 called the Pacific Jazz Alliance, based
out of Los Angeles. they had one album, called "Cool Struttin'" which was
released on Jason "KCRW/Quango/Maverick" Bentley's long-defunkt Planet
Earth label.
Aside from Shawn's wretched and excrutiating attempts at singing, it's a
pretty groovin' record. Funny thing, the liner notes describe this band as
playing on the "West Coast Scene," but as a longtime follower of Los
Angeles and San Francisco AJ events, I have never in my life seen one shred
of evidence of these guys playing live anywhere.
Anyways, after PJA, Lee produced and sessioned for various AJ-related
artists (he played percussion on the Solsonics' interlude cuts on Guru's
"Jazzmataz 2") and moved to London, I believe and even arranged one of
those "funky drum loops" sample CDs...that's the last I heard of Shawn Lee.
