Most of the time, whatever I'm listening to winds up in my weekly playlist,
but I will share one recent discovery of mine: South African township jive.
I've been investigating vocal and instrumental groups from South Africa
circa 1945-1970, and really loving it! A good overview can be had on the
cheap, with the mid-priced TOWNSHIP JAZZ N' JIVE compilation on Music Club.
Groups of note include The Skylarks (with Miriam Makeba), The Manhattan
Brothers, The Jazz Dazzlers, Dark City Sisters, etc. This music is HEAVILY
influenced by American R&B, doo wop, and jump blues of the same time
period, but has a distinct African flavor. I still need to find a few more
reissues, but coming up within the next few months you can expect to see a
special feature on this on "Jazzadelica."
