OK, I've got strong opinions about this group, so here goes. In my view, the
MMW rule is earlier the better, that is to say, if you're a fan of tighter
forms. If you like freer forms, go for the later stuff.

As they've progressed, I sense they've gotten more into abstraction, i.e.,
longer Bitches Brew type extended modal vamps, and etc.

In fact, I was surprised to see live versions of actual SONGS posted at
www.darkfunk.com, because from what I can gather, they don't do much of that
live anymore. They're just steady jamming for a couple hours. Maybe that's
what the Grateful Dead - Phish crowd likes about them? Anyway, that's what
they did at the old Ash Grove in Santa Monica, and that's what I've heard
from others who've seen them as well

So, while I rate Shack-Man higher than Combustication just for its superior
raw funkitude, I find myself liking the even earlier stuff more. Plus, the
earlier stuff has the horns, acoustic piano, and whatnot, which I like.

So, the one I'd get, as a fan of tight form over abstraction, is the newly
released "Last Chance to Dance Trance Perhaps, Best of 91-96." There are
remixes out now, also, which are hit and miss. (And, an interesting, wierd
track on Organized, a B3 tribute, with Medeski and DJ Logic.)

Funny; opposite Jamiroquai, I'm finding this is a group I wish would "sell
    out" just a bit more!

On tap to buy: Eric Truffaz, Charles Earland (R.I.P.)

On tap to return: Handsome Boy Modelling School (although I'll miss that
Grand Pu's flow,) Rawkus Presents Soundbombing II, (except, of course, for
the Bahamadia and Mos Def trax. Shouldn't Eminem be under severe psychiatric
    observation?)

On tap to get heavy rotation: Quannum Collective.

Best purchase of the millenium so far: Horace Silver; Retrospective, 4 discs
(Blue Note.) Great packaging, great liner notes, awesome pictures of Woody
Shaw and others, and the music?

Mmmm, so sweet and tasty funky. Any fans of the hardbop era of jazz (that's
bebop with some gospel and blues thrown in) will love it. Those without
experience, come on in, the water's fine! You'll be rockin this for many,
    many years.
