I'm a worldly kinda gal, but I have trouble with a lot
of names and titles in the world of a-j. with jungle
it was easy...if you can read a 5th grade science
book, you're golden... ;-)
anyway, is there a central guide I can be referred to?
I'm guessing no, so here are some questions for
whomever knows. By the way, all of this is totally
serious. Honestly, I'm clueless.
Gilles: guiles (like beguiling) or jiles?
Dego: rhymes with ego, day-glo or lego?
Kadai Tatham: whafuck?
Modaji: "MOD-a-gee" or "Mo' dodgy?"
Fela and Femi: How do you say "Kuti" without sounding
like you're accusing them of having cooties?
Bembe Segue: I kinda guessed at a portuguese-like
pronunciation of "bemby seggy" but i think I'm
mangling it.
Nitin Sawney: I've been saying NEE-tin. eh???
Nahawa Doumbia: It's the stress placement that's
puzzling. The guy at the dub spot called it NA-ha-WA
DOOM-bia.
ok, I may post more as i think of them. in return, I
can lend a hand with pronunciations that are
definitely spanish or portuguese, like Grupo
Batuque=GROO-poo ba-TWO-key. but a lot of these
names, i can't even figure out if it's french, swahili
or just some made-up shit.
thanks!
