Wow, that line up at the North Sea Jazz Festival is very impressive, Jero.
And the mixture of well known, mainstream jazz acts amongst acid jazz acts
is very cool. I remember a few years ago the big deal over Liquid Soul and
Brooklyn Funk Essentials being invited to the JVC Jazz Festival, and how
acid jazz was finally maturing. I guess acid jazz never really went pop
like some thought it would, though trip hop sort of did. And Medeski Martin
and Wood. But none is top 40, except for the new Soul. How do you guys
feel about this? Would it be better if acid jazz was played on commercial
radio, or is it better underground? I personally would find it great if the
record companies would promote more good music including acid jazz. We
would probably find that more people have good taste than we realize, if
they were ever introduced to it. I was lucky enough to have parents with
good and eclectic tastes, as well as being proactive enough to search and
discover, but many people just take in what they are spoon fed. What if
they were spoon fed good stuff.....?
I guess what has happened is that acid jazz has become more accepted in the
jazz community.
On the Liquid Soul and Brooklyn Funk Essentials note, they both have out new
albums! I haven't heard the BFE one yet, but from what I have heard from
the Liquid Soul album, it is very cool! I unfotunatly don't have any of the
Liquid Soul albums yet, so I may be wrong in this judgement, but I found it
to be more jazzy like the first, than the more R&Bish second.
