Mark hit a lot of the basic points. Slave, for my money, are one of funk's most underrated bands. Busting out of Dayton, Ohio (a hotbed of funk in the 70s) with "Slide" in 1977 as teenagers on Cotillion records, Slave went on to record several albums that spotlighted the jaw-dropping talents of Mark Adams on bass on Mark Hicks on guitar. They had an intensity and talent for bringing some jazz-like feelings to their music. Steve Washington, a relative of Pee Wee from the Ohio Players, was their leader up until his departure to form Aurra in the early 80s. Steve Arrington (singer/drummer) was recruited around 1980 for the Stone Jam album and his unique style became the focal point as they racked up hits like "Watching You," "Snap Shot" and "Just a Touch of Love."
There is a compilation on Rhino but it includes too many edits and perhaps more of Steve Arrington's Hall of Fame than there should be. The originals are the ones to get, although I think only Stone Jam is on US cd right now. You should also check out the self titled debut, Stone Jam, the Concept, and the one I think is their peak, Show Time.
