The stuff you are complaining about is my favourite sub genre. Other
examples would be the Guidance Hi:Fidelity Lounge compilation, most stuff on
Stereo Deluxe, the Om Lounge series and most stuff on Hedkandi.
For me a big appeal is the constraint aspect (similar to what people were
talking about in the house thread). There is an art to making a track that
is mellow enough to slip under people's conscious but interesting enough to
warrant concentrated listening. A lot of latin percussion works in a
similar way where at one level it is very calm and soothing but at another
it is this incredibly complicated tapestry of interacting sounds.
I have noticed this sort of music being used as muzak a lot lately in shops
and cafes but I think that's great - it might open some people up to newer
sounds.
Having said all that, I can understand why people find this stuff boring -
it doesn't really make me want to jump around like a looney the way I did
when I first heard "No Sell Out" by Malcolm X/Keith Le Blanc or "Rockit" by
Herbie Hancock.
