Born on the anniversary of Malcom X's birthday on May 19, 1968 in Marcus
Garvey Park, the Last Poets grew from three poets and a drummer to seven
young Black and Latino artists: David Nelson, Gylan Kain, Abiodun Oyewole,
Felipe Luciano, Umar Bin Hassan, Jalal Nurridin, and Suliamn El Hadi. They
took their name from a poem by South African Poet Willie Kgositsile, who
wrote: "When the moment hatches in time's womb there will be no art
talk...The only poem you will hear will be the spear point pivoted in the
punctured marrow of the villian...Therefore we are the last poets of the
world."
RIGHTEOUS VIBES: MUSIC FOR THE PEOPLE is a monthly experience that explores
various genres of urban culture & host to many local poets, emerging
musicians, hip-hop artists and community members looking for an uplifting,
smoke-free atmosphere. For more info please call (404) 386-9316 or send an
