i think you have a good point on the entertainment factor - i think some
musicians are better to appreciate while sitting down and thinking while
others are better to dance around to, or some while driving, walking,
etc... and that one shouldn't be dissed just because they don't fit into
the other's space.
i too really love alot of the older jamaroquai and moby, and even a little
fat boy slim, and think it really foolish to condemn them for making dance
music that is good to dance to.
personally i like dance music for soulfulness and dancing and think that
the label "intelligentdance music" is often put in the wrong place, with
house actually being alot more intersting from an art perspective than
"intelligent dance music" due to the acceptance of intertextuality
and a colaborativ form of music making as opposed to an outmoded idea of
"the transcendent artist" who is usually male and expressing his "deep
emotions" to those of us who cannot reach such levels of "genius".
anyways, enough of my rant - i just really don't like pretension on any
fronts, especially when it is about popular music which is basically a
rehash of stuff conceptual artists did eighty years ago without giving any
props to them.
