New York -- The Bell Atlantic Jazz
Festival, billed by its producers as "the
largest and most connected music festival in
the world," returns to Washington, D.C. (May
4-7), Philadelphia (May 11-14), Boston (May
17-21) and New York (June 1-11).
New York City will be the live focal point
of the festival with performances citywide -
including Ornette Coleman, who will open the
New York festival with a world premiere
performance of twelve new compositions. Max
Roach & Cecil Taylor, Chick Corea & Origin,
Los Lobos, Dr. John, The Art Ensemble Of
Chicago, Jeff "Tain" Watts Experience, The
Jazz Mandolin Project, Dave Douglas Sextet,
Al Green and John Zorn, are among the other
artists scheduled to perform in New York.
An opera with elements of musical theater
and new music by Steve Nieve, featuring
Elvis Costello, is also on tap.
