Week 46
This week we have to say many thanks.
First to Reine and the crew at Spinning Wheel! Thanks for the package and of
course I'll make sure the boys all get copies! Check www.spinningwheel.de
for all the latest runnings in Pfarrkirchen, Germany. New progressive spin
twelve on the block too! Check for Space Clique 'Stygian Depth'/Taurus'.
The local kindergarden supplying the art work for the sleeves as per usual!
Much love to my buddy Nathan Haines. As you know Nathan has an forthcoming
album for the Chilli Funk label due early next year. This album can only be
described as a utterly moving musical experience! Produced by Nathan and
Phil Asher for Restless Soul productions. The album will be called 'Sound
Travels' and
features uplifting vocals from Vannesa Freeman, Marcus Begg and a whole
host of fantastic musicians. Nathan's music as always, beautifully composed
and focused! His playing, of the highest quality. Dare we say it! But maybe
I have heard the best album of next year! Look out too for a forthcoming
twelve on Chilli Funk called 'Surprising' featuring Restless Soul 'Peaktime
mixes'. Nathan and the crew will be doing the live 'ting' at Bemsha every
Tuesday at the Notting Hill Arts Club.
Love also to my our dear friend Lucia P. Lucy has been missing this page of
late
but we are glad to have her back. Let me know if you get the page Lucy.
To the newest member of the Dublinaires disease! Welcome to Awanda! Ouch!
Check out www.kingbritt.net One of our favourite Producers/DJ's has a
worthwhile
website up and running! As you know King is a producer/DJ of the highest
order
and his musical experiences shouldn't be missed! Always check for a Scuba
remix! Hopefully, one day the new Sylk 130 long player will hit the
streets! The wait will be worth it!
Finally we have to say a massive thanks to all those who entertained me on
my
recent travels!
First to the NuSpirit of Helsinki crew! Many thanks to Lil Tony and the
Kerma club crew. To DJ's Eppu and Ender of the NuSpirit clan. Im sure
you've all heard the excellent Montana Roha Ep for Compost records and the
Makoomba Breaks Vol 1 Ep for Guidance records. If you haven't, then please
do so. NuSpirit do it live too.
To the lovely Eva (please send some jpegs of your paintings).
To Sampo and Marika in Lifesaver records. I will check the crates for you
sir!
To Maria Silven. I will promise to send you some CD's very soon.
To Kimi and Sanna from the 'Mother' bar! Probably the best music I heard all
weekend! Everything from dancehall bizniz to the latest broken beats!
To Anu who I met in the Mother bar on Friday night! Sorry I didn't get to
see you on Saturday and very sorry about what happened throughout that
night. I promise to buy you another dry Cider when I see you again. And I
would like to see you again! ;)
I have to say a massive thanks to the people who looked after me on this
most
enjoyable trip. To Sampsa and Katja who's flat I stayed at and who's food Imost
enjoyed. Thank you Sampsa for taking days off from your studying to look
after
me. To my dear buddy Henkka who's infectious personality and smile makes me
proud to be a part of the human race. You are much fun young Henrikki. We in
London miss you very much. To the fittest member of the clan and the best
looking, Vesa, Son of Sun Ra! Thanks for all your help Vesa with the
journeys
etc. To Juse, who's little house party early Saturday night was much fun!
And who's little record collection contained not one single duff record!
This group of young people are collectively known as the 'Leftside
Ensemble'. All students and therefore all very poor! But their sheer love
and enthusiasm for music and particularly jazz is nothing short of
inspiring! We know of this little group through a tidy little chart in a
past edition of 'Chaser' and of a one off gig at 'Balance' at the Plastic
People club here in London in the spring. They have a nice little night at
the Jump Inn bar every Wednesday and if you're in Helsinki, then do check
them out! It's hard not to be touched by their enthusiasm and love for jazz
music, their
explorations and excursions into the great musicians, artists and labels.
It does remind me of my youth! Its good to know the next generation of jazz
headz! There will be some nice little parcels on their way to Helsinki to
say thank you for all your support and help during my visit.
I did meet one other special person on this trip. A beautiful Finnish girl
called Pia. Thank you Pia for your kindness and support, I didn't get to
spend as much time with you as I would have liked. These boys talk very
highly of you! Very highly! There must be a reason, I would like to know
the reason too. Hopefully I can entertain you when you come to London in a
few weeks. In fact, I'd like you to DJ with me at the 101 bar when you get
here. You can raid my record collection! Again, thank you all for your love
and support during this trip. While you may preach 'Jazz is the Teacher',
always remember 'Love is the Religion'
Roll on the leftside!

This weeks Java joint is dedicated to Sampsa Vilhunen. You need this recordyoung man!
Duke Pearson - 'I Don't Care Who Knows' (Blue Note 35220) 1970
My favourite Duke Pearson recording. Featuring Andy Bey, Airto, Floria
Purim, Bob Cranshaw, Ron Carter and Frank Foster to name just a few.
Recorded with Flora and Airto in mind and they do really steal the show!
Awesome tracks in 'Xibaba' and 'I don't Know'. Pearson's electric keys
adding spirit and space to the latin influence, also extremely soulful in
places. If you get the chance, please puchase a CD copy of this great album
as there are three or four amazing additional tracks including wicked
versions of 'Captain Bicardi' and 'Upa Neguinho'
Seek and Enjoy Sampsa.
Till the next time.
The One Sweet Daddy.
