    peeps

recently got a copy of francisco mora's world trade music CD on planet e's
community projects label. francisco is a drummer who is / was also part of
carl craig's innerzone orchestra project. the other main players on wtm
are keyboard player craig taborn and bassist rodney whittaker, both also
with i/o. the only review in the music press i saw for this release was in uk
jazz mag straight no chaser who gave it the thumbs up.

the CD is ok, pleasant enough, no surprises, straight up in a cool style,
drums unexceptional, piano ocassionally veering towards noodly, very
little in the way or structure or arrangement, a bit of exotic percussion
here & there. i don't know hwy anyone would want to listen to this in
preference to some truly creative shit from the last 50 or so years.

i'm kinda curious as to why planet e are releasing stuff like this. i know
a lot of ppl are giving props to a lot of jazz players but just saying the
names aint enough. ppl like miles, fela and sun ra were amazing
powerhouses of creativity who gave their whole lives to their music which
will live forever and it takes more than a few flute solos to achieve this
kind of thing. in comparison to some other *similar* releases of
contemporary jazz, let's say 'motion' by cinematic orchestra or 'live
infinis' by frederic galliano (both of which i'd say are really doing
something fresh and original with jazz styles) the mora CD really looks
pretty ordinary in comparison. i know there is probably a market for this
kinda thing but is this what planet e really wants? what's next? kenny g
    remixes?

    peaceout
