heya Gord,
I have to second Adam's opinions on shops.
• Play de Record: start here 'cause it's true that they have a solid Guidance
section. Also, they've got one of the best collections of Main Squeeze, Archive,
2000 Black etc. type of stuff, generally mixed into the jazz/soul jazz/ deep
grooves section. Ask for Jason Palma or Dave Cooper when you're in there and
they'll sort you out. 416.586.0380.
• Metropolis: generally have a wide and solid selection of underground sounds. They
always have a fair bit of Guidance stuff in the house section; definitely check
their 'Urban Jazz' (or whatever) section also. They won't have as much on the
broken beat tip though. However...if you're buying CD's as well as or rather than
vinyl, this is a good place as they have large stock of both. 416.364.0230.
• Rotate This: is a must visit if only for the excellent diversity and solid titles
of every nature. Loads of CD's as well as vinyl, and some real collect-a-holics on
staff. 416.504.8447.
• Also on Queen St. W. are two other places I'd suggest checking, the Record
Peddler (huge store, often with great stuff) and, down the other end of the strip,
Vortex/Kops. Now this place is a gem. Upstairs is lots of collectors stuff,
including a whole wall lined with rare and semi-rare 7"es! This is a dream shop for
those into funk, soul, r&b etc. Downstairs in Vortex, the titles are eclectic and
varied, often with new interesting stuff now that a guy named Eliot is doing the
buying of new, underground sounds.
• Finally, in case any of you are making a TO shops list here, your visit wouldn't
be complete without hitting Cosmos Records, also on Queen West. Pretty much all
vinyl, this place is run by a guy named Aki (of the infamous Movement DJ crew) and
he's totally devoted to rare and ultra-rare jazz, soul, Brazilian, Latin, Japanes
and other releases. It's often pricey 'cause we are talking rare here, but when
guys like Rainer Truby, Keb Darge, Fantastic Plastic Machine, UFO, and the list
goes on and on and on, all drop hundreds & hundreds of dollars in one go, you know
that Aki is onto something here (and that our Canadian dollar sucks so everyone is
pretty happy with the exchange! :-).
There are a number of other quality shops, but these are the ones that stand out
IMHO. Hope that helps. Happy hunting!
