MCees and Poets of all kinds, all places:
Alright you've heard of the "Freestyle" documentary that's been sweeping
the country, right? It won 4 film festivals so far (LA, Atlanta, NEW
YORK, and Woodstock).
Cool. But now the film/tv industry has shown interest in it. So the
directer and producer of the film (Kevin aka DJ Organic - hence "ORGANIC
FILMS") is scrambling to make the documentary more inclusive of the
illest freestylers in the country. Already the film talks about and has
clips of freestyles and interviews from SuperNat, Common, Freestyle
Fellowship, Medusa, The Last Poets, The Welfare Poets, Divine Styler,
Pharoah Monche, Mos Def and Talib Kweli as well as many underground
MCees (including myself).
But there are lots of people missing. If you know about the art of
"freestyle" rhyming (off the dome, lyrical improvisation), then I'm sure
you know of someone dope who should be represented in this film, but is
not.
WELL, we got together with ORGANIC to put together a show at WETLANDS,
featuring as many of the dopest freestylers as we could find. So far,
we have Punch & Words, Wiseguy & Gaston, The Dwellas, D-Stroy, Bad Seed,
HYDRA, Pack FM, Pauley Ethnic, Freestyle Union, Plexus, muMz the
schemer, The Dwellas,
Punch & Words, Orko, Mr. Khalyl (Mr.Man), C-Rayz Walz,
Many Styles, Ace Lover, ... and the list goes on.
We kinda have all the acts we can fit in the show, but we knew there
would be people we didn't get or did not know, who may have some ill
freestyle skills, so we got a band and a DJ on hand and will have a
limited open mic that night. We are NOT taking pre-sign ups online.
You have to just show up that night and sign up to get on the open mic,
but I'm letting you know we are looking for poets who are nice off the
top, to come thru and spit some words at the open. I mean, not a
written poem, but a truly on the spot improvised vers. I know muMz does
that often, even in his shows and at open mics, that's why he is reppin'
for the poets (although he MCees and says poems). We need more cats
like that to come out and represent, so if you know heads, put them on
and if not, you should still come and see what the film is about. It
basically connects the culture of cyphering and battling in Hip Hop to
jazz, preaching, griots in Africa, what The Last Poes were doing in the
60's and shows how the freestyle sessions in cyphers around the country,
bring people together in communication and strengthen us spiritually and
keep the artform on point and always innovative. It's dope.
The film will be shown as it is now, at the event, before the concert
begins. I'll send more info about it as the date approaches, but please
spread the word. We have to help Organic Films spread the word about
our lyrical culture that we all created and participate in, even on the
web through the internet chat sessions, battles and poetry groups.
Peace.
