Pick of the Week: A Guy Called Gerald comes back at us with Essence, his first album in five years, and first-ever for Studio K7! Old-school Gerald fans should be just as pleased as those new to his songwriting and programming skills; once again AGCG has done a bang-up job of taking drum & bass (and related sounds) forward, while nodding obviously and appropriately to the musicís ? and his own ? past. Guest vocalists include Louise Rhodes of Lamb, Lady Kier, David Simpson, and incredible Brit singer-songwriter, Wendy Page.
Guest: Toronto vocalist Nicky Lawrence dropped by to talk about her then upcoming gig at 52 Inc.ís Roxy Blu event. This super-sweet, beyond-talented singer went on to blow up the spot that night; with her rich tones and strong stage presence, Nicky actually managed to get a Friday night Roxy crowd engaged in a sing-along! No small feat, especially considering the sound problems she encountered throughout her set. Watch out for much, much more from this young woman, including a brand new 12" released on T.O.ís Gemma Records.

Pick of the Week: Bahamadia reemerges! Following four years of living, growing, guesting on other peopleís joints, hosting a top-rated radio show in her hometown of Philadelphia, not to mention fighting legal battles with her former label, the hip hop emcee with THAT voice lays the excellent BBQueen EP on us. Itís an independent affair (on Good Vibe), featuring guests such as Slum Village, Rasco and Planet Asia, that grows on you with each listen. The main complaint youíll hear from fans is that this is too short a release after four long years (mostly) out of earshot, but she is at work on a full-length now ? expected to drop early in 2001. Yippee!
