Two new CDs on Beatservice have really caught my attention as of late:
Information - Successor > Fantastic second full length for this group, this
CD has an amazing 99 tracks on it. All of course are very short but when
played either on Random setting or straight through it's an ambient gem.
Successor dabbles in acid jazz, cinematic spooky themes, ethereal ambience
and a few uptempo numbers enroute to a suprisingly warm and complex
listening experience that has me coming back for more. The short of it
is... I like it! On a side note each track has a title, some hilarious.
Upper Rooms - Video Bambino > Another pleasant listen that is put forward
as Warp inspired, and indeed it is, reminiscent of Plone in some of the
tones and passages. However, the classical training Upper Rooms frontman
Isak Anderssen has undergone gives the music an elegant feel. Not all
tracks hit the mark, but the ones that do are beautiful.
Other notes : the new Spring Heel Jack is so wildly different than his
early releases!! Hit and miss for me, but I liked the song Trouble and Luck
on his new album. His EP on Tugboat is devoid of drum and bass - it's good,
but will leave some SHJ fans scratching their heads.
