I was listening to Gilles Peterson's "Worldwide" last night and heard some
ultra-new tracks, namely the new Roni Size Reprazent and the new offering
from Guru's "Jazzmatazz 3" project.
The new Reprazent tunes did not disappoint, one was totally non-DnB,
sounding a little like a cross between Big Beat (with thick '80s drum
machine sounds as opposed to rock/funk loops) and - dare I say it - 2Step
(though more on the techy Azzido do Bass tip than MJ Cole's soul). The
other was sort of like spoken word drum n bass, which thankfully never
relied on any old DnB cliches...I can't wait!
The Guru track Gilles played had Erykah Badu on vocals, singing a little
more jazzy than usual, which is nice. Funny thing, I was driving down the
street with my window rolled down and a dude in a convertible was passing
me and I can hear Erykah's voice echo from the other car, listening to the
same station. How cool.
There's some great tunes coming out of 2000 after all...
