Keyser & Shuriken - newsletter #33: Running and walking beats
Newsflash 25.09.2000
Dear friends,
so you might have already realised that we are getting hectic with the
newsletter business, and it won't get much better in the next few months,
due to university studies, our day time jobs, remix works and dj gigs.
Anyway, we have some good news:
Listen! Shuriken's track - Psyked Up Muzak
(http://www.compost-rec.com/sections/listen/music/mp3/079.mp3) - is finally
available on the Future Sounds of Jazz 7 compilation on Compost Records
(www.compost-records.com) representing the nu jazz sound of Budapest
world-wide. If you have a chance to listen to it, we would appreciate your
comments!
Brothers and sisters educate yourselves! Shuriken is giving a course on the
history and political economy of recorded music at the Media Department of
Eotvos Lorant University, Budapest. The homepage of the course is now
online (http://emc.elte.hu/~lp2mp3), even if it's only in Hungarian, most
of the links lead to exciting English texts on the matter.
Our home studio is finally up and working again (after more than six
months), so expect new stuff soon. We promise to sleep less to get our own
tunes and remixes ready real soon. We might quite possibly take part in
producing the new Grencso Collective album as well. There are more
insecure, but yet top secret projects going on. We'll keep you informed.
And now, read about the history of the swing beat:
"I'm into swing. I get that from the American Indians like the Sioux, the
Arapahoe and the Apache. They have this drum-beat, heart-beat. Bom, bom,
bom. They had the walking beat, which is slower, and the running beat,
which is faster. I used that almost all the time on this record. I claim
that swing came from them. If you listen to Indian music from the plains,
you'll hear that there's a steady swing beat and the big tom-tom is
syncopated with swing-type melodies.
I got that influence when I was six-years-old in Wyoming. My father took us
to an Arapahoe Indian reservation. The chief let me sit on his lap and let
me beat the tom-tom for the Sun Dance. So, that goes back to the early
'20's for me."
- from an interview with Moondog made by Jason Gross

Keep on swinging till next week!
