Keyser & Shuriken - newsletter #52: The Profit Returns to the Subculture
Newsflash 03.04.2001
Dear friends,
Hurry, if you still want to listen to our last show while reading the playlist, as we
are a bit late again with the newsletter. We hope you'll fell better as we send the
next one in a few days... :)
We felt lucky to leave the smoky Budapest last weekend for the lovely town of Pecs,
south of Hungary to celebrate the birthday of a friend of us. The party was held on
the top of the broadcast tower, about 500 meters high above the city. Watching the
citylights they just seemed to be a sign for the aliens to land there. The right
place for the Cukis...
Last week we returned to our old homebase, the Astro Jazz Lounge - now run by mate
djs Suhaid & Zotyka - to play two separate sets. Shuriken spinned some old time easy
favourites: music for lovers! Keyser paid tribute for the afro giants. Fela, Tony
Allen, Manu Dibango and co. in da mix. Respect for everybody who keeps the vibe
alive, especially Martin and the Antibalas, plus Manu and Eric of Comet Records.

This week's reading goes out to those who return their hard earned $$$s into guerilla
biz!
"[...] Many dance acts work on two levels, releasing their more difficult projects on
small labels, while the productions with a chance of being a hit are brought out on
major labels. Directly or indirectly, the profit returns to the subculture. By the
early 90s the dancefloor underground had become the biggest and most profitable area
of the independent scene. The spectrum of music extends now from acid jazz via the
countless variations of hip-hop to all kinds of house music. The meaning of
underground within the dancefloor movement varies enormously: in hip-hop the
tradition of black soul and funk rebellion is linked up with all possible political
and metaphysical ideologies. The black house scene saw itself in the tradition of
disco culture and insisted on rigid separatism. The white house scene, from acid to
techno, combined the impetus of punk with the affirmative attitude of disco and pop.
The acid jazz movement, on the other other hand, saw itself as the avant-garde of
good taste and thus primarily as a lifestyle guerilla force. [...]"
Ulf Poschardt in his amazing book about DJ culture, called - surprise, surprise - DJ
Culture (Quartet Books, 1998), p.29. Those who still believe in the power of the
written word: go out and get it!
Keep on doing the guerilla biz till next week!
