This is my first post. Been lurking for a while - this is a really great list!

I recall a teacher at an audio engineering night course I took talk about a study that was done that is relevant to this discussion. As stated above, the human ear cannot normally detect sounds above 20kHz *by themselves*. The study (though I don't recall who did it, so it could be bs...) was structured around having people compare full spectrum programme material that had 'inaudible' content (ie. frequencies above 20kHz) with the same material that had those frequencies removed. It turns out that people could detect the difference between the two programmes. In particular, if the very high frequencies were 'harmonically related' to frequencies found in the audible band, then a difference could be more easily percieved.

Not that this argument supports vinyl over CDs, just thought it was interesting.

We are currently in post-production with the first artist we've signed on Two Top (check out Sinewave on mp3.com, if you're interested). Because it's Drum'n'Bass(y), the plan is to release vinyl and CDs at the same time. Vinyl for DJs/Club promotion (and for people, like me, for whatever reason, actually like vinyl), and CDs for wider distribution. The world would be easier if we just had one music delivery media, but would it be better? Don't know. Reality is, DJs use vinyl - a lot! Are they doing it just to be cool? I really don't think so. Vinyl is still around (and will be for a long time) because people find it incredibly useful. Me - I just think it smells better than CDs...
