Keyser & Shuriken - newsletter #54: The Knife

    Newsflash 11.04.2001

    Dear friends,

Imagine the following situation: you dj at a party organised in a cinema until 3:00
AM, you get home and can't help messing around in your bedroom studio until 6:00 AM
working on some nasty blues hop loops. You know you should not miss the start of the
biggest annual record fair at 9:00 AM, because the competition among crate-diggers
has grown fierce in the last year. You know that if those bastards get there before
you, you won't find anything else but cheap euro-disco, Best of Bay City Rollers
albums and loads of prog rock. When you wake up, you have to realise of course, that
    it's well over noon... a vinyljunkie's nightmare.

That's exactly what happened to Shuriken last Sunday. Still - with definitely mucho
help from the god of vinyl-addicts - he has managed to come across a great deal of
old school funk/soul/jazz gems that form the core of this week's radio sessions
doubled up with the heavyweight packages of new stuff that hit Keyser's mailbox.
(He's the man to send your crunchy beats to in case you wouldn't know). Whooohaaa!
The mix is so hot, it might melt your wires while downloading/streaming, so you'd
    better watch out.

This week's reading goes out to all the hard working people who sleep less to produce
    more great music:

"If you were a cab driver in New York in the late 1950s, chances are Donald Byrd was
a fare at one time or another. So much was happening in New York, and Byrd was at the
center of it, working every day - cabs to the studio in the morning, cabs to the
clubs at night, cabs home in the morning. There was an almost insatiable demand for
the hard bop Byrd and his contemporaries from Detroit were playing, and Byrd shuttled
from Blue Note to Savoy to Prestige, offering his services. He literally performed on
    60 albums from 1955 to 1958.

"We called him 'The Knife,'" said bandleader Mel Lewis of Adams, "because when he'd
get up to blow, his playing had almost a slashing effect on the rest of us. He'd
slash, chop, and before he was through, cut everybody down to size."

Do check Byrd's slashing and chopping in the mix from an extra-extra large Blue Note
album, one of Shuriken's greatest findings on the fair.

Keep on groovin till next week!
