hey P, D, and all,
Even though I keep talking about Mr. Dan Snaith (ie. Manitoba) and feel like
I've posted many a raving 'check him out!' here on the list, I've gotta weigh
in once again :-) I've been in love with Manitoba's sounds since first
hearing some stuff on CD-R a little over a year ago, and have zero hesitation
in recommending the album on Leaf. For a real treat, also pick up the
'Invisible Soundtracks' EP that also came out on Leaf (late last year). It
features a Manitoba track called 'Anna & Nina' which isn't included on the
album, but is heartbreakingly gorgeous. I always get calls about that one when
playing on air. If you're into melodic yet experimental, jazz, classical, and
hip-hop inspired quirky, delicate beats 'n pieces, then this is an album to
check.
Rather than going on and on any further, might I suggest checking these links
for two different articles I wrote recently about the man:
http://www.eye.net/eye/issue/issue_03.22.01/thebeat/extended.html
http://www.exclaim.ca/common/display.php3?articleid=581
Also, with thanks to the listee who recommended this site earlier today
(yesterday?), there is a DJ set by Manitoba (don't be surprised by all the
hip-hop! he's a huge fan) at the aforementioned
http://www.btinternet.com/~interactivedj
Finally, for those in the Toronto area, Manitoba will be guesting with myself
and Andrew Allsgood on Wednesday May 9 for our weekly Glide Wednesdays at
Gypsy Co-op, 817 Queen St. W. No cover.
Oh yeah! In relation to today's hip-hop thread, someone recently mentioned
Toronto crew Da Grassroots (yeah!). These guys really are wicked, producing
some seriously solid, jazzy/funky sounds with totally conscious flows smoothly
running throughout. The album, 'Passage Through Time,' came out on Conception
Records (U.S. label, as is the case with so many Canadian hip-hop talents, a
whole 'nother story), was distributed by Nu Gruv, and (I think) is still
pretty readily available.
All of da guys also do other side projects. Likely of most interest here would
be Nick Murray, aka Mr. Murray or Murr, and his partnership with Rosina. Under
the name of LAL, they recently released the excellent 'Corners' album on
Toronto label Public Transit Records (PTR). Check the web site for more info
and sound snippets. And while you're there, check out the sounds of label-head
Moonstarr. His brand new 'Dupont' LP kicks serious beats! He's a comrade of
the 4 Hero boys (Marc Mac had a track on the last PTR comp., 'Blue Night
Network'), and produces totally out there d&b, electro, and broken beats. I
think PTR is now being distributed by Goya in the UK/Europe so you folks over
there should be able to find this stuff too. Online at:
http://www.ptrmusic.com
Alrighty, 'nuff bigging up of the Toronto scene for one day. Though I could go
on to mention Triplet and the whole Gemma crew (www.gemmarecords.com, Dirk
mentioned the yummy new Triplet 12" the other day), and sooooo many others.
Over 'n out for now.
