I have to echo the praise for turntablelab.com, they have a wicked selection
of roots reggae (not to mention soul, funk and a bit of jazz). Great
service, nice website and good reviews...big up for the 7" pressure!
A few nice releases I've picked up recently...
Jim Nastic & C. Dodd-Chanting 7"-Studio One
Wicked chatterbox DJ (MC) over rankin' beats..."Oh sweet africa"
King Tubby-Dance Hall Style Dub-Clockwork
With Sly & Robbie on the drum an de bass leading up the band & Tubby on the
dub for this full length session...well nuff said. "From the grass dub" &
"Easy Dub" are my favorite cuts off this album.
Augustus Pablo-Roots, Reggae & Dub from the Melodica King-Ocho
An incredible reissue comp from Ocho of one the greatest Jamaican musicians.
Pablo's dubs are as deep as the ocean, and his Melodica playing is nothing
but otherworldly. The album also has some nice instruments not normally
found on Reggae records, like the vibraphone on "new style dub". Lots of
stuff originally released on Pablo's "Rockers" imprint.
As far as Jamaican music goes there is an endless stream of quality records
out there. Unfortunately, most Reggae selections (commercial) are usually
stuffed with 90% Bob Marely records and 9% bad 'new age' dancehall shite.
A good primer for roots dub, rocksteady and ska is the Heartbeat 2 CD
re-issue comp. "Respect to Studio One". From Perry to the Heptones to early
wailers this CD is a great intro to the Blue Note of Jamaican labels, Studio
One.
peace,
