12.08.01 Week 29
Ursula Rucker at Cargo this Wednesday night in
Rivington Street. 'Supa Sista' album out in a few
weeks. Production added by Rob Yancey, 4 Hero,
Alex Kid, Jonah Sharp and King Britt. Do not miss this gig!
Talking off illadelphia! King Britt, Philly's finest returns to
London for his 'Cosmic Lounge' residency at the AKA/The
End this Saturday on West Central St.
Quasimoto and Madlib weekend at PP. West coast
shenanigans at our favourite little venue on the east side!
Should be fun. check press for times, bookings and all!
PP of course Plastic People.
Thanks to Aki and Koh as always for another splendid
night at the Cafe Zun Zun session at the Vibe bar on
Brick lane. Not often I get to play pure Brazilian music
alongside the more contemporary percussive tinged party
bizniz! This nights works because the new and the old
blend in so well together. Every Saturday and different
guests every week on the strip.
To Sherri aka 'Little Miss Sista Soul', we luv ya boots!
And thanks for spinning with me at Granny last week!
To Ms Janine Wright, we luv ya boots too!
#### #### This weeks chart (* New Entry) #### ####
1. 4 Hero - Les Fleur (Talkin Loud) 12"
Well, you know what be big fans we are of Dego
and Marc. You know we never miss out on a remix
or a production in any of their guises. This though is
something very very special! One of the most beautiful
tracks every composed gets the utmost respect from
these guys! If you ever wanted a Stepney production
to be reborn in the 21st century, you ask 4 Hero. Check
for 9 by 9 track on the flip that won't be appearing on the
album. Unless of course you live in Japan!
2. Jimpster - Deep Down (Kudos) 12"
12.20am! Red car approaching Big Ben! Me and the
kid from Gothenburg! Plastic People here we come.
Shaker sound followed by conga groove! The kid from
Gothenburg, he informs the Cuki to listen out! The red
car speeds, slick gear changes, volume control on the
column on the up! Warm Rhodes, shaker still sounding
good, vocoder enters! A whisper about being 'deep
down'! Plastic People can wait, we go the long way round.
Chadwick informs us, but we already know! Red car
speeds off into the distant night! Me and the kid from
Gothenburg. Respect to the Jimpster for the 12"!
3. V/A - Omoa music sampler (Omoa) 12"
Recloose and buddies bring it on! New music from
Detroit, music to butterbuns and all! The twelve has
a seal that it invites you to go ahead and open! As if
I need inviting! My gruppy little hands sweating with
excitement as the needle hits the various grooves.
And this just the start. My buns well and truly buttered.
I suggest you seek and enjoy the same experience.
4.* Enola 5 - Moonlighting (Cooker) 12"
Ta to the Weston for this one! The main man mailing
out enough goodies at the mo! Been in the CD-R
collection for some time but we finally get vinyl and we
certainly feel the need to re chart and support. Solid
beats throughout this three tracker
5.* Reunion - Eona (Remixes)(Dialog) 12"
This chart is full of Jamie 'Jimpster' and Seiji 'Opaque '
mixes! Respect to both producers for adding their
fingerprints to Sonar Kollektiv artist Reunion classic 'Eona'
6.* Sunaga T Experience - Chitose Airport (Flower) 12"
Good vibrations with this twelve! Flip has a decent 'Swag'
remix of CA but the original cuts the mustard with Cuki.
On the Japanese 'Flower' imprint so expect to pay a
small fortune for this!
7. Ursula Rucker - Supasista (K7) CD-R
Philli poetess/goddess comes with her debut via K7
recordings. She gets to sing on here too but its the
narration with soul that we love her for the most. The
best spoken worder on the planet? Yep, I reckon.
8. Victor Davis - Sound of the Samba (JCR/Compost) 12"
When skies are grey and troubles arrive. Escape
to the sound of the samba. I'm sure you all know
about Victors credentials! His wonderful song writing,
his beautiful and soothing musicianship, his ability to
touch ,heal, calm! His voice, his gentleness. It will be
impossible for this man to ever make a bad song.
Hold tight for a stunning album outta Haagar St too.
9. Mondo Grosso - MG4R (Sony) CD
Remix album featuring Tania Maria getting two step
treatment from the Wideboys and Amel Larreriux getting
slightly more subtle treatment from the Ananda Project.
Blaze and Da Lata adding the list of top draw remixers.
Excellent remix project!
10.* Micatone - Step into the gallery (Mighty Bop remix)(No Zession) 12"
One of my favourite tunes of the year gets a worthy
remix from the Mighty Bop crew. We also get an
extended and remastered original. If you didn't get
this album then you missed out pretty big!
11. Jackson 5 - Get it together (4 Hero remix)(Motown) CD
4 Hero in the more of a Tek 9 guise than '9 by 9' one!
The best remix from the second part this Japanese
collection. Whatever 4 Hero touch, be it drum n bass,
hip hop, broken beat, they are the dons! I need vinyl!
12.* Kitty Winter & Gipsy Nova - Feel It (Spinning Wheel) 1xLP
Old album and one that has been missing from my
collection for far to long! But thanks to the guys at
Spinning Wheel this will see a worthy reissue in October!
We know about tracks such as 'New Morning' and 'Mato
Pato' but the rest of the album is a beautiful listening
experience too.
13.* Suv - Nina(Full Cycle) 2x12"
Bristol breakbeats return! This time though with Suv
at the helm and percussive on his mind. Check for the
'Nina' track and the side stepped 'Flamenco Cybernetico'
All taken for the forthcoming album called 'Desert Rose'
14.* Space Clique - Continue the journey(CB mix)(Spinning Wheel) 12"
One of my favourite tracks from the excellent 'Bogaloo'
compilation gets the fractured funk rework! Check for
the 'Celestial boogie' mix early next month outta southern
Germany of course.
15.* Tapani Tolpanniemi - Jazzin Around (Brique Rouge) 12"
A little anthem at Granny! The title says it all! Gentle
little roller with a guitar lick to help you feel the sunset
at Point 101. Nik's been bugging me with this and many
thanks to David for getting a copy to the Cuki.
16.* Aqua Bassino - Beats n Bobs (F Com) 12"
Solid twelve with stonking house groove for the A.
B side we get a nice hi-fi jazz waltz chill your boots ting.
F Com on the bus ride for sure!
17. Alison David - 'Mixes' (Bitasweet) 12"
Domu mixes of one of last years secrets! As always Mr
Stanton respecting the original but adding that futuristic
feel. We particularly enjoy the tempo change. A great
song, a great remix.
18. Restless Soul feat Valerie Ettiene - Beautiful (People) 12"
Match made in heaven! Valerie with the 'Up', Phlash with
the 'Lift'! Quality soulful house music from the westside!
19. Robbyn Rhodes - 'Untitled' (Stereo Deluxe) 12"
Bass to shake the furniture, keys to tingle the spine and
top of that you get this Bobby Womack sound alike!
Robbyn Rhodes aka Roberta Rodriguez outta Helsinki
with a album in the new year for Oli and the crew. Check
out the previous releases too for nine2five recordings.
20.* Dom Um Romao - Remixes (Head to Toe) 12"
Little side step twelve from the Irma Compilation of remixes
for Dom Um Romao last outing. Featuring the West London
crew's Opaque, Catalyst, Nubian Mindz. Best of the bunch
though is the G-Force remix of Sanctuary. Head to Toe
outta Italy.
21. Moonstar - Dupont (PIR) 2xLP
Been on a 'hush hush' for so long know that I forgot about
this! Did find a vinyl copy this weekend and back in the
box! Outta Canada and all over the place. Hi Tech jazz
with broken beats!
22. Alex Kid - Beinvenida (F Com) 2xLP
We checking this album for the collaborations with Ursula
Rucker and the remix with Richard Dorfmeister. Two very
deep and moving tracks worth the price tag.
23. Reel People - Spiritual (Opaque remix)(Papa)12"
While Seiji tears it up over in San Fran, we get to
experience another ruff and uncompromising piece
of west London technological soul music. If you
bugged out over the P'taah remix he did, then get
ready for this
24. Cinematic Orchestra - Brotherhood (Comet) 12"
The Allenko Brotherhood Ensemble gets the Jason
Swinscoe treatment! We've charted as CD-R bizniz but
the vinyl deserves another push. As always, the ever
consistent Comet crew the source of such musical
integrity.
25. Full Spectrum - V/A (Nova records) 2xLP
Gilb-R and I:Cube with new rubs including I:Cube's
remix of Sylk 130 Romeo's Fate which only appeared
on the Japanese version of King's great album. Quality
comp throughout but then again, Gilb-R's pedigree
firmly established.
26. Pablo - High Jazz (Red Hook) 12"
Yippee! Paul Hunter goes all Sun Ra! Exactly what the title
says. High forms of jazz music! Taking from the 'Story of
sampling' EP which is very good but you need to turn off the
lights to the high jazz baby!
27. Earthbound - Be Strong (Tutti Frutti) 12"
Another new label out Switzerland we think. No info on
the white but all the usual suspects from Earthbound,
Max Fresh and a little ambient gem by Nos! Cuki got
the info!
28. The Underwolves - 'Mixes' (JCR/Compost) 12"
Exciting twelve this, as you get the Fauna Flash 'Timbalas'
mix of 'Shaken' and Switzerland's finest, 'Earthbound' take
on a mid tempo twist of 'Bird Song'. And that's the B-side!
A-side containing 'In the picture' which featured on the last
'Off-Centre' compilation. A new vocal rub on this too.
29. Kyoto Jazz Massive feat Bebel Gilberto - View from her room (Sony) 12"
Only released in Japan as a promo! We've charted and
supported as CD-R, I'm gonna do the same with my vinyl
copy. Think I got another copy coming too! See, its not
only 'Wesser' wit da Japanese nuggets!
30. Butti 49 - Spiritual Rotation (?) CD-R
Not the Norwegians again! Yeah, the boys can come
anytime with licks like this. This time, my dear friend
Snorre comes with the super mellow modality. Kick ya boots
off and place them in the refrigerator! Then when totally
chilled, head of to the excellent 'Whiffenpoof' club night.
#### #### Coffee Compliment #### ####
Lou Bond - S/T
(We Produce) XPS-1904 (1974)
Six track debut album though I'm not sure if any other
Lou Bond albums ever got out there! Famous for the 11+
minute 'To the Establishment' which is about as deep as
it gets. Massive string arrangements and Lou singing it
from his darkest side. Spine tingling song that never
fails to stir emotion. We Produce records was a little off
shoot label of the mighty Stax.
