these might not be the ultimate releases to begin exploring latin
jazz, but they're certainly some of the best latin jazz out there:
A. 60s/70s:
barrio nuevo (souljazz); all kinds of fusion between latin & the
various northamerican genres (funk, soul, rock, disco)
broasted or fried / freak off (harmless); both absolutely gorgeous
compilations of latin-funk & latin-soul, with some really hard to find
tracks
nuyorica 1/ 2/ 3 (souljazz); the compilation series that is considered
by many to be the blueprint of a new genre that emerged in new york
city during the late 50s/early 60s: latin jazz!
mongo santamaria - skins (milestone) / live at the village gate
(riverside)
eddie palmieri - the sun of latin music (mpl) / straight ahead
ocho - ocho best (souljazz)
har-you percussion group (cubop)
fania all-stars - live at the yankee stadium vol 1-2 (fania)
cal tjader - black orchid (fantasy)
tito puente - el rey del timbal (rhino)
B. contemporary:
most of the cubop/ubiquity releases (snowboy, bobby matos, johny blas,
afro cuban all stars (world circuit) - on the more commercial tip
cuban revolucion jazz (milan)
for a real great reference guide to contemporary latin music, check
the article by dj lubi jovanovic, on straight no chaser vol 2-no 14
(spring 2001).
hope this helped.
