    Cuki chart, playlists, news!
    19.08.01 Week 29

Nik, the UPPERcase keys are on the left had side
marked Caps Lock! And can we have gaps in between
the sentences. You ain't Japanese yet but it sure does
    read like Japanese!

Many thanks to King Britt for having me at his London
'Cosmic Lounge' residency last Saturday. The third
Saturday in every month King and special guests do
it at the AKA joint at the End on West Central Street W1.
King as you know the leading light of all things quality
on the other side of the pond and the true representative
of our scene over there! Respect to one of the best
producers, best DJ's and finest human beings on the
third planet in! We luv ya boots King!
Shouts also to Dr Bob Jones for his wonderful selection
of music the very same night. The soul surgeon and the
King on the same bill, blimey, what a treat!

Koop back at Plastic People next saturday. Some folks
know already about this eccentric little outfit outta Sweden.
Some may have heard the highly anticipated album due
out in the new year on the Compost label. If you have or if
haven't, you still need to venture down to Curtain Rd for the
'Balance' sessions with Ade Forsyth the resident music
    selector and his special guests!

Shouts this week to four very fine and enthusiastic people.
Orla and Paula Magee who know the score when it comes
to fine music. So wonderful to witness such enthusiasm from
new friends about our little scene. And you know the scene
is safe when you hear and see such animation and
excitement from people like Orla and Paula.
Same goes for guys like Liam and Dominic Hart who are
also on this wonderful musical journey that empties your
    pockets of all disposable income!
Enjoy the journey boys and girls!

To BBE's Carolyn, one of my favourite peeps. Just thought
I'd give you a mention! Stay lovely, x

Carolina! Ouch, did we miss you! To the nicest little elephant
on the planet! We luv ya boots!

Talking of boots! I got an wicked jpeg to show anybody who
is interested. Giving to me by the nice peeps at Strut records
who are about to launch another excellent album in the
series of Afrostrut African albums. This one the definitive
story of 1970's funky Lagos called 'Nigeria 70'.
Contact me at Alan.D.Brown@chase.com and I'll send ya
the jpeg. You gotta check this guys boots! We luv them.

Speedy at 'Version'! Gotta be a giggle! Not sure if the
Osmonds did a cover of 'Light my Fire' but if they did,
you can bet your last buck Dom Servini will be playing
it at 'Version' this Wednesday. Curtain Rd on the east
side of town the place to be from 8 till whenever they
kick him off the decks! No tax on the door, no dodgy
clothing policy apart from the appalling dress sence
this boy shows day in day out! And that haircut! Jesus!
    I blame the mum!

    Madlib/Quasimoto/Yesterdays New Quintet, Egon,
Chris/Peanut Butter Wolf doing their thing at Plastic People
last weekend! I knew I was at a proper Hip Hop shin dig
cause there was no girlies about! Look out though for the
west coast invazion. YNQ album gonna kill it in the fall. Add
this to the new stars outta Detroit and quality out of Philly
and NYC and you know hip hop has never been healthier.

    #### #### This weeks Cuki action (* New Entry) #### ####

    1. 4 Hero - Les Fleur (Talkin Loud) 12"
Well, you know what be big fans we are of Dego
and Marc. You know we never miss out on a remix
or a production in any of their guises. This though is
something very very special! One of the most beautiful
tracks every composed gets the utmost respect from
these guys! If you ever wanted a Stepney production
to be reborn in the 21st century, you ask 4 Hero. Check
for 9 by 9 track on the flip that won't be appearing on the
album. Unless of course you live in Japan!

    2. Jimpster - Deep Down (Kudos) 12"
12.20am! Red car approaching Big Ben! Me and the
kid from Gothenburg! Plastic People here we come.
Shaker sound followed by conga groove! The kid from
Gothenburg, he informs the Cuki to listen out! The red
car speeds, slick gear changes, volume control on the
column on the up! Warm Rhodes, shaker still sounding
good, vocoder enters! A whisper about being 'deep
down'! Plastic People can wait, we go the long way round.
Chadwick informs us, but we already know! Red car
speeds off into the distant night! Me and the kid from
Gothenburg. Respect to the Jimpster for the 12"!

3*. Asheru & Blue Black - Elevator Music (Seven Heads) 12"
Without a doubt my favourite piece of hip hop of recent
times! Asheru & Blue Black of Unspoken Heard fame
come with those warm jazzy vibes, mucho educated
lyrics and hypnotic beats. Holding tight for a forthcoming
album too. Dego gotta be feeling this one!

4*. Yeterdays New Quintet - Bomb Shelter EP 7"
Stripped naked of all unessentials. Rhodes, Wurlies,
Vibes and the best Drum kit out there left to take you
on this sparse but intimate journey. Hip Hop or Jazz?
Who cares! The Invazion has started. It started out west.
    Be ready.

    5*. Afro Force - Goza (2000 Black) 12"
The record with two catalogue numbers! First heard
in Dub form on the 'Phuturistc dancin' comp outta Bitasuite
now we get the original lick through Dego's '2000 Black'.
There must have been some mad puff going on that night!

    6*. Michelle Shaprow - If I lost you (King Britt's Scuba mix)(Warner
    Bros)12"
It's a Scuba mix, do I have to tell you more! No, I didn't
think so! You hold these record by the edges, you put
them back in their proper sleeves, the proper way in too!
King Britt...... the man, Scuba trip...... the ultimate dance
    floor experience!

7*. Plutonia - What you know (Visions) 12"
What you know? What I know is this should come with a
government health warning about getting sore feet!
Dance your boots off baby! More manic west London
soundclashes, this time Dego and Alex with the collabration.
Check for the excellent 'Opaque' remix of 'Forever' on the flip.

    8. V/A - Omoa music sampler (Omoa) 12"
Recloose and buddies bring it on! New music from
Detroit, music to butterbuns and all! The twelve has
a seal that it invites you to go ahead and open! As if
I need inviting! My gruppy little hands sweating with
excitement as the needle hits the various grooves.
And this just the start. My buns well and truly buttered.
I suggest you seek and enjoy the same experience.

    9. Enola 5 - Moonlighting (Cooker) 12"
Ta to the Weston for this one! The main man mailing
out enough goodies at the mo! Been in the CD-R
collection for some time but we finally get vinyl and we
certainly feel the need to re chart and support. Solid
    beats throughout this three tracker

10*. Los Landrones - Montana Rusa (Earth Project) CD-R
True percussion, true progression. Earth Project come
with the real deal in this super solid long player. Authentic
music in a superficial world is a hard come by thing but this
delivers. Get ready for the single that will precede the album.
Ta to Noah and Felix for the up front.

    11. Reunion - Eona (Remixes)(Dialog) 12"
This chart is full of Jamie 'Jimpster' and Seiji 'Opaque '
mixes! Respect to both producers for adding their
fingerprints to Sonar Kollektiv artist Reunion classic 'Eona'

    12. Sunaga T Experience - Chitose Airport (Flower) 12"
Good vibrations with this twelve! Flip has a decent 'Swag'
remix of CA but the original cuts the mustard with Cuki.
On the Japanese 'Flower' imprint so expect to pay a
    small fortune for this!

    13. Ursula Rucker - Supasista (K7) CD-R
Philli poetess/goddess comes with her debut via K7
recordings. She gets to sing on here too but its the
narration with soul that we love her for the most. The
best spoken worder on the planet? Yep, I reckon.

14*. Herbie Hancock - The Essence (Transparent) 12"
Never really been one for the Bill Laswell thing but Herbie
and Chaka Khan carry this through to good effect. Chaka
and her amazing vocal talents and Herbie gets his
keyboard out for a change! On a DnB tip but don't let that
put you off and do check out the forthcoming Future2Future
album soon come. The twelve even has a Krush remix
    just for Nik Weston.

    15. Jackson 5 - Get it together (4 Hero remix)(Motown) CD
4 Hero in the more of a Tek 9 guise than '9 by 9' one!
The best remix from the second part this Japanese
collection. Whatever 4 Hero touch, be it drum n bass,
hip hop, broken beat, they are the dons! I need vinyl!

    16. Kitty Winter & Gipsy Nova - Feel It (Spinning Wheel) 1xLP
Old album and one that has been missing from my
collection for far to long! But thanks to the guys at
Spinning Wheel this will see a worthy reissue in October!
We know about tracks such as 'New Morning' and 'Mato
Pato' but the rest of the album is a beautiful listening
    experience too.

    15. Victor Davis - Sound of the Samba (JCR/Compost) 12"
When skies are grey and troubles arrive. Escape
to the sound of the samba. I'm sure you all know
about Victors credentials! His wonderful song writing,
his beautiful and soothing musicianship, his ability to
touch ,heal, calm! His voice, his gentleness. It will be
impossible for this man to ever make a bad song.
Hold tight for a stunning album outta Haagar St too.

    16. Space Clique - Continue the journey(CB mix)(Spinning Wheel) 12"
One of my favourite tracks from the excellent 'Bogaloo'
compilation gets the fractured funk rework! Check for
the 'Celestial boogie' mix early next month outta southern
    Germany of course.

    17. Mondo Grosso - MG4R (Sony) CD
Remix album featuring Tania Maria getting two step
treatment from the Wideboys and Amel Larreriux getting
slightly more subtle treatment from the Ananda Project.
Blaze and Da Lata adding the list of top draw remixers.
    Excellent remix project!

    18. Micatone - Step into the gallery (Mighty Bop remix)(No Zession) 12"
One of my favourite tunes of the year gets a worthy
remix from the Mighty Bop crew. We also get an
extended and remastered original. If you didn't get
this album then you missed out pretty big!

    19. Suv - Nina (Full Cycle) 2x12"
Bristol breakbeats return! This time though with Suv
at the helm and percussive on his mind. Check for the
'Nina' track and the side stepped 'Flamenco Cybernetico'
All taken for the forthcoming album called 'Desert Rose'

    20. Alison David - 'Mixes' (Bitasweet) 12"
Domu mixes of one of last years secrets! As always Mr
Stanton respecting the original but adding that futuristic
feel. We particularly enjoy the tempo change. A great
    song, a great remix.

    21. Restless Soul feat Valerie Ettiene - Beautiful (People) 12"
Match made in heaven! Valerie with the 'Up', Phlash with
the 'Lift'! Quality soulful house music from the westside!

    22. Kyoto Jazz Massive feat Bebel Gilberto - View from her room (Sony) 12"
Only released in Japan as a promo! We've charted and
supported as CD-R, I'm gonna do the same with my vinyl
copy. Think I got another copy coming too! See, its not
only 'Wesser' wit da Japanese nuggets!

    23. Butti 49 - Spiritual Rotation (?) CD-R
Not the Norwegians again! Yeah, the boys can come
anytime with licks like this. This time, my dear friend
Snorre comes with the super mellow modality. Kick ya boots
off and place them in the refrigerator! Then when totally
chilled, head of to the excellent 'Whiffenpoof' club night.

    24. Dom Um Romao - Remixes (Head to Toe) 12"
Little side step twelve from the Irma Compilation of remixes
for Dom Um Romao last outing. Featuring the West London
crew's Opaque, Catalyst, Nubian Mindz. Best of the bunch
though is the G-Force remix of Sanctuary. Head to Toe
    outta Italy.

    25. Moonstar - Dupont (PIR) 2xLP
Been on a 'hush hush' for so long know that I forgot about
this! Did find a vinyl copy this weekend and back in the
box! Outta Canada and all over the place. Hi Tech jazz
    with broken beats!

    26. Reel People - Spiritual (Opaque remix)(Papa)12"
While Seiji tears it up over in San Fran, we get to
experience another ruff and uncompromising piece
of west London technological soul music. If you
bugged out over the P'taah remix he did, then get
    ready for this

    27. Cinematic Orchestra - Brotherhood (Comet) 12"
The Allenko Brotherhood Ensemble gets the Jason
Swinscoe treatment! We've charted as CD-R bizniz but
the vinyl deserves another push. As always, the ever
consistent Comet crew the source of such musical
    integrity.

    28. Full Spectrum - V/A (Nova records) 2xLP
Gilb-R and I:Cube with new rubs including I:Cube's
remix of Sylk 130 Romeo's Fate which only appeared
on the Japanese version of King's great album. Quality
comp throughout but then again, Gilb-R's pedigree
    firmly established.

    29. Earthbound - Be Strong (Tutti Frutti) 12"
Another new label out Switzerland we think. No info on
the white but all the usual suspects from Earthbound,
Max Fresh and a little ambient gem by Nos! Cuki got
    the info!

    30. The Underwolves - 'Mixes' (Compost) 12"
Exciting twelve this, as you get the Fauna Flash 'Timbalas'
mix of 'Shaken' and Switzerland's finest, 'Earthbound' take
on a mid tempo twist of 'Bird Song'. And that's the B-side!
A-side containing 'In the picture' which featured on the last
'Off-Centre' compilation. A new vocal rub on this too.

    #### #### Coffee Compliment #### ####

Richie Havens - Something Else Again
    Verve 3034 (1968)
My favourite Richie record and I know the people who have
been mailing me about the soulful outings on this feature will
dig this. Probably best remembered for the use of the sitar which
Havens took on board along with his smoky vocals and acoustic
guitar. 10 tracks that never fail, including the deep felt 'Sugarplums'
and 'The Klan'. An essential folk, soul, jazz album.
