For me, there is little NO organization in my collection which ain't all
that big. Basically I seperate things into 12"s/EP's and then LP's and
anything pre 90's has it's own shelf. Also anything I play often or
anything i just bought is in a stack set aside on the table with the
turntables. As was mentioned i also look for things by spotting the spine
or color of the album... so for me that'd be the best way to organize if i
take the time. i've tried the genre thing, but the genres got mixed up in a
matter of a few days so theres no point in that for me. As for cd's... those
have even less organization... i have boxes in closets with cds and i have a
stack to my right, a stack behind me that fell over and they are so random
(in front of me i see freddie hubbard, krs one, parliament, redman and
    goldie!). so:

    12"
    LPs
    OLD

also i weed things out every so often, sell any (12"s usually) I dont want
or never play. in fact i have a stack of 30 right now that need to be dealt
    with.

    peace.
