    hey there everyone,

Sorry for sending your In-box another e-note so soon, but I've just been
given the go ahead to do some giveaways for a special show happening
this Thursday at Roxy Blu here in Toronto. First, the full scoop:

Alchemy presents, in from Hull, U.K.
Fila Brazillia's Steve Cobby in his Toronto debut
    alongside
Alex Robbins (Montreal, Hustle Productions) and T.O.'s own
Andrew Allsgood + Denise Benson (Glide Wednesdays) and
    Felix and Gani (milk., Ecoutez)

    Thursday August 30 ~ from 9pm
Roxy Blu, 12 Brant Street (upstairs main room and lounge)
$15 advance, tickets @ Vice, Rotate This, Play de Record, Cosmos,
    Metropolis
$20 @ the door (if available)

For those less familiar with Fila Brazillia, they are Steve Cobby and
Dave McSherry (aka Man). Together, the duo have been making music for
over a decade, releasing their first single, "Mermaids" on infamously
tiny Hull, UK label Pork Records in 1991. Six amazingly adventurous
albums followed on Pork, released between 1994 and 1998.

In '99, they started their own label, Twentythree, and released A Touch
of Cloth. Trying to describe their sound is difficult at the best of
times, as this album proved: spacious and spacey, uptempo, downtempo,
funky and far-out...hell, it's soul-infused, always lush and highly
musical and, most of all, good. "Pop music for adults" is one way that
    Steve has put it.

As they get set to release their eighth album, Jump Leads, in early 2002
(again on Twentythree), they've kept us fan-types happy with their
Brazilification collection of remixes (they've produced over 60 remixes
to date, for artists ranging from Radiohead and Lamb to Busta Rhymes, DJ
Food, Black Uhuru and the Orb) as well as their newly released 'mix' CD
    Another Late Night.

This collection is more like a mix tape you'd make for a friend.
Obviously a labour of love and a trip through their personal
collections, it features Marvin Gaye, Mr. Scruff, the Beta Band, Brian
Eno, Kelis, Nightmares on Wax, David Holmes, Fila's own wicked cover of
Nat King Cole's "Nature Boy" and loads more.

Hell, if this is what Steve Cobby's DJ'ing is like, I'll be glued to the
dancefloor as soon as Andrew and I are finished our own set! Variety is
the name of the game and I always adore someone who can tie their varied
musical interests together well. Looking forward to it, obviously, as
you can tell by my sharing all that I know about Fila in one little
email :-) Look out for my related article in this week's forthcoming
Extended Play (Eye weekly, www.eye.net) as well.

And now, the words you've been reading for: the organizers of this gig
have given me five pairs of tickets to offer up to you, dear e-list
members. The first five people who hit me back and mention the name of
Fila's forthcoming album will be on the guest list. I'll e all five of
you back to confirm that you've won.

Good luck! See you tomorrow night at Glide (Gypsy Co-op) when Mark Rae
joins Andrew and I (no cover), and definitely see you Thursday at Roxy
Blu for this Fila Brazillia special event. What an incredible week for
us lovers of varied tempos, tones, beats and pieces. Yum!!

Have a safe and wonderful Labour Day weekend as well ya'll. xo
