26.08.01 Week 34
My life is so boring when I compare it to comrades
Keyser and Shuriken. What a newsletter! Where do
you get the time to scratch your noses! And if only
Nik had those typing skills. Mind you we did get
spaces this week though. I hoping next week we
get UPPERcase when appropriate.
Ta to the Speedy for the Mouseorgan tee
Ta to Dirk at Compost for the Jazzanova tee
Ta to Koichi in Japan for the lovely parcel
Catch me with Nigel 'Prankster' at the Charterhouse bar
this Saturday for a battle of the hair gels! We'll be bringing
along some top tunes to boot! And if we don't, you could
always go to Fabric!
Sorry to hear that Strut records will not be reproducing
the excellent fashion accessory as worn by the hip
dude on the cover of the forthcoming Lagos 70 album.
'We luv his boots' was the universal chorus coming
back to me last week!
Congratulations to Plastic People's Ade on the birth of
baby Lily Ella. Congratulations to Avi on his engagement.
I think congratulations is in order for Avi for just getting in
contact.
So you all enjoyed the ins and outs? I'll do it again
very soon. Next week maybe we'll have a 'fresh'
and 'stale' section. 4 Hero the freshest I think at the mo!
#### #### This weeks chart (* New Entry) #### ####
1*. 4 Hero - 'Sampler' (Talkin Loud) 12"
It just gets better! Dollis Hill or Heaven! I'll take Dollis
Hill. Another day, Hold it down, Blank Cells and
Twothesame seeing quality time on the 1200's. This
probably never seeing a commercial release so hunt
down the sampler twelve before the album drops in
mid October. 4 Hero taking the top two slots. Yep you
the album will be number 1. In its on time though.
2. 4 Hero - Les Fleur (Talkin Loud) 12"
Well, you know what be big fans we are of Dego
and Marc. You know we never miss out on a remix
or a production in any of their guises. This though is
something very very special! One of the most beautiful
tracks every composed gets the utmost respect from
these guys! If you ever wanted a Stepney production
to be reborn in the 21st century, you ask 4 Hero. Check
for 9 by 9 track on the flip that won't be appearing on the
album. Unless of course you live in Japan!
3. Jimpster - Deep Down (Kudos) 12"
12.20am! Red car approaching Big Ben! Me and the
kid from Gothenburg! Plastic People here we come.
Shaker sound followed by conga groove! The kid from
Gothenburg, he informs the Cuki to listen out! The red
car speeds, slick gear changes, volume control on the
column on the up! Warm Rhodes, shaker still sounding
good, vocoder enters! A whisper about being 'deep
down'! Plastic People can wait, we go the long way round.
Chadwick informs us, but we already know! Red car
speeds off into the distant night! Me and the kid from
Gothenburg. Respect to the Jimpster for the 12"!
4*. V/A - Organic Soul (Soul Brother) 2xLP
Respect to Soul Brother for getting on this. Laurnea,
N'dambi, Ledisi and Karen Bernod, some of the new
breed of outstanding vocal talent gets another mention
through this wonderful compilation. Most of the tracks
only ever seeing the dreaded CD format. Nice to get
this stuff on the vinyl front and will be in the box for
'Granny' for many a month.
5. Michelle Shaprow - If I lost you (Scuba mix)(Warner Bros) 12"
It's a Scuba mix, do I have to tell you more! No, I didn't
think so! You hold these record by the edges, you put
them back in their proper sleeves, the proper way in too!
King Britt...... the man, Scuba trip........ the ultimate dance
floor experience!
6. Asheru & Blue Black - Elevator Music (Seven Heads) 12"
Without a doubt my favourite piece of hip hop of recent
times! Asheru & Blue Black of Unspoken Heard fame
come with those warm jazzy vibes, mucho educated
lyrics and hypnotic beats. Holding tight for a forthcoming
album too. Dego gotta be feeling this one!
7*. Albin Janoska - Lem (Klein) 12"
How we love the spooky sound tracks! Spooky 'boots'
going to Vienna and looking forwards to more from the
'Small' label in Wien. Proper left field hip hop from a new
talent on the final part of the 'Sincerely yours' showcase.
Do check out the first four releases too! Mid October the
release date and I'll be drinking proper coffee in my new
home town by then.
8* Yeterdays New Quintet - Bomb Shelter EP 7"
Stripped naked of all unessentials. Rhodes, Wurlies,
Vibes and the best Drum kit out there left to take you
on this sparse but intimate journey. Hip Hop or Jazz?
Who cares! The Invazion has started. It started out west.
Be ready.
9. Afro Force - Goza (2000 Black) 12"
The record with two catalogue numbers! First heard
in Dub form on the 'Phuturistc dancin' comp outta Bitasuite
now we get the original lick through Dego's '2000 Black'.
There must have been some mad puff going on that night!
10*. Jombo Life Pt 2 - Aquarius (Clairaudience) 12"
Another quality release from Clairaudience. Always on the
spiritual tip but still taking it to the dance floor. Main mix with
a slightly west London feel, crisp drums, quality keys and
some gorgeous chick given me the Aquarius vocal ride.
Well if she looks like she sounds!
11*. Koichi Ozaki - I find what I need (Edge) 12"
Outta Hiroshima. Shin scratching rhythms, take note pianos
giving this music a real twist. As always from the land of the
rising sun, you get tip top production and arrangements.
Looking forwards to more music from Koichi in the near future.
12*. Beatless - Love from the sun (Ubiquity) 12"
Second twelve from the forthcoming album. This one a bit
spesh too. 'Love from the sun' one of my favourite fusion
tunes gets the 21st century rub. Special guests in the form of
Jeanne and Chache, aka vocalists with the 'Sons and
Daughters of Life' give the track the ultimate blessing.
A-Side worth investigating too. Title track from the
forthcoming album with a remix by yes you guessed it!
Opaque aka Seiji. Does this man ever sleep?
13*. Nero - Darkest days (JCR) 12"
Back in 98 a tasty little seven appeared on the scene with
an infectious little melancholic bossa beat. Nice to see
JCR/Compost picked it up and are giving it a properly release
with a full peak and moontime remix action from Restless
Soul. Original cut will probably do it the most but expect to
hear one of Phil's mixes on a dance floor near you very soon.
14*. Atjazz - BC (Phil Parnell mix)(Mantis) 12"
Is this the artist's name? Someone help! Loving the twisted
mix of this tune. Phil Parnell I know from some Lifeline
bizniz outta Herbert territory.
15*. Bah Samba - Tired little one (Estereo) 12"
Enough good music coming out of Brighton at the mo!
Bah Samba one of our favourites and as always super
soulful with the Latin lick. Alice Russell sings it from the
heart, Julian Bendall plays it from his soul. Beautiful song.
16. Plutonia - What you know (Visions) 12"
What you know? What I know is this should come with a
government health warning about getting sore feet!
Dance your boots off baby! More manic west London
soundclashes, this time Dego and Alex with the collabration.
Check for the excellent 'Opaque' remix of 'Forever' on the flip.
17. V/A - Omoa music sampler (Omoa) 12"
Recloose and buddies bring it on! New music from
Detroit, music to butterbuns and all! The twelve has
a seal that it invites you to go ahead and open! As if
I need inviting! My gruppy little hands sweating with
excitement as the needle hits the various grooves.
And this just the start. My buns well and truly buttered.
I suggest you seek and enjoy the same experience.
18. Enola 5 - Moonlighting (Cooker) 12"
Ta to the Weston for this one! The main man mailing
out enough goodies at the mo! Been in the CD-R
collection for some time but we finally get vinyl and we
certainly feel the need to re chart and support. Solid
beats throughout this three tracker
19. Los Landrones - Montana Rusa (Earth Project) CD-R & 12"
True percussion, true progression. Earth Project come
with the real deal in this super solid long player. Authentic
music in a superficial world is a hard come by thing but this
delivers. Get ready for the single that will precede the album.
Ta to Noah and Felix for the up front.
20. Reunion - Eona (Remixes)(Dialog) 12"
This chart is full of Jamie 'Jimpster' and Seiji 'Opaque '
mixes! Respect to both producers for adding their
fingerprints to Sonar Kollektiv artist Reunion classic 'Eona'
21. Sunaga T Experience - Chitose Airport (Flower) 12"
Good vibrations with this twelve! Flip has a decent 'Swag'
remix of CA but the original cuts the mustard with Cuki.
On the Japanese 'Flower' imprint so expect to pay a
small fortune for this!
22. Ursula Rucker - Supasista (K7) CD-R
Philli poetess/goddess comes with her debut via K7
recordings. She gets to sing on here too but its the
narration with soul that we love her for the most. The
best spoken worder on the planet? Yep, I reckon.
23. Herbie Hancock - The Essence (Transparent) 12"
Never really been one for the Bill Laswell thing but Herbie
and Chaka Khan carry this through to good effect. Chaka
and her amazing vocal talents and Herbie gets his
keyboard out for a change! On a DnB tip but don't let that
put you off and do check out the forthcoming Future2Future
album soon come. The twelve even has a Krush remix
just for Nik Weston.
24. Jackson 5 - Get it together (4 Hero remix)(Motown) CD
4 Hero in the more of a Tek 9 guise than '9 by 9' one!
The best remix from the second part this Japanese
collection. Whatever 4 Hero touch, be it drum n bass,
hip hop, broken beat, they are the dons! I need vinyl!
25. Kitty Winter & Gipsy Nova - Feel It (Spinning Wheel) 1xLP
Old album and one that has been missing from my
collection for far to long! But thanks to the guys at
Spinning Wheel this will see a worthy reissue in October!
We know about tracks such as 'New Morning' and 'Mato
Pato' but the rest of the album is a beautiful listening
experience too.
26. Victor Davis - Sound of the Samba (JCR/Compost) 12"
When skies are grey and troubles arrive. Escape
to the sound of the samba. I'm sure you all know
about Victors credentials! His wonderful song writing,
his beautiful and soothing musicianship, his ability to
touch ,heal, calm! His voice, his gentleness. It will be
impossible for this man to ever make a bad song.
Hold tight for a stunning album outta Haagar St too.
27. Space Clique - Continue the journey(CB mix)(Spinning Wheel) 12"
One of my favourite tracks from the excellent 'Bogaloo'
compilation gets the fractured funk rework! Check for
the 'Celestial boogie' mix early next month outta southern
Germany of course.
28. Mondo Grosso - MG4R (Sony) CD
Remix album featuring Tania Maria getting two step
treatment from the Wideboys and Amel Larreriux getting
slightly more subtle treatment from the Ananda Project.
Blaze and Da Lata adding the list of top draw remixers.
Excellent remix project!
29. Butti 49 - Spiritual Rotation (?) CD-R
This unreleased track getting props everywhere. And
deservedly so, modern day model bizniz for the headz
So come we hope in any finsihed format. Norway got the
jazz lick.
30. Earthbound - Be Strong (Tutti Frutti) 12"
Another new label out Switzerland we think. No info on
the white but all the usual suspects from Earthbound,
Max Fresh and a little ambient gem by Nos! Cuki got
the info!
#### #### Coffee Compliment #### ####
Jack Wilson - Song for my daughter
Blue Note BST 84328 (1969)
Very underrated pianist. Lot of jazz albums of the late sixties
took on board the pop and folk thing. Covering songs like
'Scarborough fair' and 'Stormy'. This on also took on board
the most amazing string arrangements not to get a proper
mention. Favourite track with this morning's coffee gotta be
the 'Night Creature' with it's massive string arrangement and
bossa feel. One of the 'safer' albums by Jack Wilson but I
still love it for the strings! Check out other quality albums on
Blue Note by the man.
