I would think most of us was born into the birth of Acid Jazz, which is a
term that is jazz and funk influenced music crossing over with new ideas of
todays beats. It was 5 years ago that Acid jazz was the "only" term used to
describe that music. It's the principle of AJ that has opened up the
creative minds of many music talents to create the music we all love to talk
about on this mailing list.
Today it's still the same.
Look at the two pioneers who named "Acid Jazz" aka Gilles Peterson and Eddie
Pillar. I have met Gilles 2 years ago and interviewed him before. I have
dj'ed with Eddie Pillar last year. Gilles is playing the sort of music that
we are all talking about. Eddie P is spinning old classics that we all love
and respect . So what's the difference between these two djs.? What makes
them so intrinsically linked can be summed up in the magazine "Straight No
Chaser". The magazine covers what these two pioneers present vision. The old
with the new, the new with the old. . Both djs are playing the whole
spectrum of new jazz, funk, brazilian, samba, soul, disco, hip hop, whether
new or old. Add to the list the more mature new skool stuff -broken beat,
jazzy house, brazilian influenced break house, 2-Step whatever you would
term it, the list goes on. I know from everyone's emails it is the same as
what we envision, our hope to continually search and/or create for new AJ
music.
My point is that AJ has grown up. Djing has grown up. Djs are more creative
and producers too. Listeners demand more and its' this relationship that
music continues to grow. We are all experimenting with new things. And it's
guys who try it on 45 rather than 33 or visa versa says many positive things
to me about our AJ community.
Why can't everyone be more open minded about it? This mailing list is one of
the channels to the soul of AJ. We should focus on where it's are at and
where it will lead to. Not only where it came from.
It's late, I've got to read the rest of my emails.
Calvin.
