Speaking of Nu Soul, the Lina album, _Stranger on Earth_, hasn't stop
playing at my house since I picked it up a week ago--
For those who haven't heard the story, Lina is a Dallas singer who's
worked up this 20's Harlem Cotton Club/Billie Holliday style, crossed
w/mod hip-hop & r&b stylings-- she was working w/a producer whom she
didn't sign w/for some reason, who wound up completely *biting* her
style w/Blu Cantrell ("Oops! (Hit 'em Up Style"). Lina's friends all
thought it was *her* on the radio when they heard it, & a little
war's since broken out between the 2 singers (Blu called Lina's ass
fat, Lina has a nice "screw you, blu" song on the album).
Lina blows Blu away, needless to say. The album ranges from
trip-hoppy torch songs which'll put a big smile on Portishead fans'
faces, to the almost broken beat "Playa No More", w/lots of amazing
golden-age-of-jazz-vocals styles throughout--
Check it out: http://www.lina-online.com
Oh, & Blu's apparently qualified to judge asses, having had a run in
Black Tail magazine, according to the latest Popbitch! Here's the
link they gave: http://www.freakcafe.com/blu.html -- handle w/caution!
