::: FUGAL QUEASE aka Michael Norris :::
Fugal Quease aka Michael Norris is a popular name in the Brisbane and
Australian sound art/noise/experimental music community. He has
performed at many festivals, clubs and sound art performances
including Small Black Box, Mantra, Zen:Warehouse, numerous outdoor
parties and most recently at the Powerhouse in Brisbane where his
main piece involved screeching chalk on a blackboard over a
soundscape of farts and giggles. (!!)
Michael Norris has curated many events such as the Gratings
performances @ Angry Mime Space, which hosted both local and
international sound artists.
Michael's music in some forms is typically quite extreme and
sometimes difficult to listen to for long periods of time, but to
watch him perform live is a sight to see! His performances are
imaginative and it is virtually impossible to predict which inanimate
object will be used to create the sounds he massages. His passionate
percussive skills are well known and he has been known to frequent
the live drum jamming sessions held at Spin&Jam where local
percussionists whip the room into a frenzy of improvised beats and
rhythms which take a life of their own as they flow from the hands of
the drummers - if you haven't seen or played in one of these
sessions, mark it in your diary to check the next one out! Michael
has also collaborated under a few other names such as the Hutt River
Space Agency & Flew Creeking.
Michael Norris has dabbled in various performance styles over the
years including: junk percussion (banging things [Bachiatari]);
multimedia performance poetry (shouting at people
[Bunweasel/Schtonk]); experimental DJing (playing too many records at
once [ZZZ/Spin&Jam]); noise collaborations (turning things up to
eleven [Flew Creeking]); electroacoustic soundscapes and eclectic
electronica (making bloopy screechy noises [Fugal Quease]). Previous
Fugal Quease live sets (at Zen Warehouse and Woodford) have ranged
from hard noise to easy listening via flamenco, synth tweakage and
brass band music, and have featured odd-meter beats and home-made
electroacoustic instruments.
Visit the Fugal Quease website @
http://www.itee.uq.edu.au/~michaeln/quease.html for more information
on this unique artist - music is available for preview on MP3.com.au
@ http://www.mp3.com.au/FugalQuease/, and also at IUMA.com
[http://artists2.iuma.com/IUMA/Bands/Fugal_Quease/]. Fugal Quease
have released a CD called "pencil sketches" and will be featured on
the upcoming "Disturbing Cages" cd project [A collection of responses
to John Cage's 4'33" - more info @
http://www.itee.uq.edu.au/~michaeln/cages.html].
This week's show features some new music from Fugal Quease:
"Most tracks are straight out of the DX100 with just a bit of
filtering - no loops, no sequences, no samples, no effects, no major
editing - as I would do in a live set. Tracks 4,7,9,10,11 are mostly
mono with a tiny bit of filtering to give it some stereo-ness. The
other tracks have extra layers with wide stereo to compensate. In
particular, track 8 is almost entirely done with the Sound Potty (the
fluffy blue thing), which gives some unique (if a bit drain-pipey)
stereo effects."
As for track names:
1: Kratzen - german for "scratching" - refers to friction microphone
on laminex used to create the high-pitched drone.
2: Compared with light - biblical, from Solomon - "compared with
light, wisdom is preferable"
10: Polunsky unit: the prison wing where another Michael Norris is
being held on death row in Texas for shooting his girlfriend and baby.
11: Vensterstuk: Dutch for "window piece" - a bass drone I made by
modulating the DX100 to rattle the windows in my loungeroom in
interesting rhythms. May be mostly inaudible on some systems.

NQuit Presents Third Option "STILL"
Release # NQ005(CD)
---In the desert, the heart stands a mountain... it has no place
to keep its secrets.---
Announcing the release of THIRD OPTION, "STILL". Available on compact
disc from NQuit.
Third Option, a remarriage of language and music, is a new
cyberpoetic fusion, combining techno, spoken word and classical style
melodies. NQuit's longtime franchise act M.C.Murph, brings his 10
years of production and hip-hop experience, adding improvisational
talent and composition genius, and fuses them with the vivacious,
ethereal presence of lyric and slam poet Tamara Nicholl, who has
performed for seven years. Fusion and interplay among these intense
performers is the name of the game here; a second honeymoon for sound
and word...
"Still" is a five track remix EP, which includes the album mix and
four remixes of "Still", the first ever Third Option song to include
Tamara Nicholl. "Still" is NQuit's favourite track on the upcoming
full length CD, "FROSTED MINI WHEATS".
"Still" is an ethereal, 120bpm dance tune with a beautiful piano
melody and choral background singing by Tamara and M.C.Murph.
THe poetry? "Still", by Tamara Nicholl. It will make you think about
the city, how we hide in it, how we build it up around us:
"In the desert, the heart stands a mountain
it has no place to keep its secrets"
"In the cities of gray slate buildings, all night marquees
and flashing billboards of Virginia Slim and Camel Joe
we stuff our ears with the 24 hour, seven-day-a-week diner of
fibre optic chatter..."
Visit NQuit's website @ http://www.nquit.com for free audio
downloads. You can contact the label via info@nquit.com or their
website. Third Option's website is at
