There was an interview in the Observer a couple of weeks ago with Ken Burns
(is that his name? Is it the same Ken Burns that used to play for
Nottingham Forest?) which mentioned that Jazz will be shown on the BBC
later on this year.
It also said that until he decided to do the series, and started talking to
people and researching it etc, he knew virtually nothing about jazz, hardly
listened to it, and only owned 5 records which could be described as 'jazz'
(one of them was Girl From Ipanema, can't remember the others...) - so this
might explain why he didn't do an hour on 'Ascension' and another hour on
'Space Is The Place' - if he didn't go into the project with his own
perspective and taste, then he would only know (and be influenced by) the
likes of Wynton Marsalis or whoever else had a big contribution to the
programme.
Which is a pity - maybe if he'd talked to someone else they could've
converted him to The Church Of John Coltrane (best sunday afternoon of my
life ever), and the series might not have skimmed over those bits.
But what do I know? I haven't even seen it yet.
Patrick.
PS. I am a habitual lurker on this list, but would like to take the
opportunity to say thank you people for some good recommendations, chat etc
on this list over the years.
And while I'm here. Nightclub DJ: My advice is this: if someone asks for
something rubbish, smile politely, say you'll play it next, then put on
Eulogy and Light by Funkadelic, followed by You Doo Right by Can - after
that, they will have gone home, and/or killed you. Either way - problem
solved. I have done similar and not been killed yet, although I did nearly
get thrown out of a window at a college gig once. (The fools - it was the
ground floor.) But the moment when you stick on I Believe In Miracles
straight after Yoo Doo Right is a beautiful joyous sensuous moment of
happiness and relief and funkiness all around and is one to behold for one
and all.
Currently making me bark like a baboon:
Another Mellow Winter by Mellow. Got this ages ago and didn't think much of
it but now Iike it more every time I hear it: French group sounding like a
cross between Air and The Beatles and Syd Barrett - kind of whimsical (in
places) psychedelic folk electronica. Very nice.

P.S. Any recommends for Minnie Riperton? I've heard two track's,
Inside My Love and Les Fleur and I have to say there two of the sexiest
tracks I've ever heard.
P.P.S. Nice one for the PBS Jazz thread, that was some good
readin'.
Hope someone in Ireland or Britain picks it up.
