Speaking of catching up on old school Jazz records, here are a couple of
sweet gems I picked up in Philly over the weekend:

Archie Shepp: Sea of Faces (Black Saint, 1975)
From the catalog number this looks like the second record released on the
Italian Black Saint jazz label, and it is SLAMMIN. The first side is one
whole song that starts out with a nice (samplable...) groove and escalates
into intense and highly tonal improvisations. Reminiscent of that track on
New Thing at Newport with the french name, but much more intense and wild
especially towards the end. On the flipside is 'Song For Mozambique' a
tune which I immediately recognized thanks to a recent Acid Jazz remix (
though I cant remember by who... anyone know?? )... which also features
Shepp reciting a poem he wrote. This song is definitely worth checking out
for those on the Black History Month thread....

Max Roach: Deeds not Words (Riverside, mid 60's)
Somehow all the songs on here sounded familiar, but oh what a sweet and
solid record this is! Check the last song on the second side for the
excellent Roach solo track Conversation... Overall I guess this record is
hard bop or post bop or whatever you call early/mid-60's jazz at its best.

Now that I think of it, coincidence or not: one of my favorite records of
all time, which I cant recommend enough, is a double album on Hat Hut
Records: Max Roach and Archie Shepp, "The Long March"
This features just the two of them improvising, in a 'free jazz' kind of
style where each song is so frought with emotion, tone, complexity, and
just straight up chops, its an absolute pleasure to experience.

    OK peeps keep swingin

    Nat
