[2] For Frosty...P'taah, Alpha Omega
All of the P'taah remixes on De-Compressed have been released on vinyl. But
its nice to have them all collected together, its amazing to relize how much
of the music you miss while djing...how many inside cuts you don't even
realize exist.
For those who don't know Nubian Mindz and Alpha Omega are one in the
same...(fyi Opaque=Phoojun=Seiji, Domu=Sonar Circle).His new double 12" EP
on Reinforced (4 Hero's D&B imprint) is called the New Wave EP. Six
cuts...three are straight up warehouse Drum & Bass tunes...hard & clangy
with P.Enemy and Ragga samples and old school (ravey) synth sounds, very
similar to recent Total Science tunes...the other three are more in line
with his Nubian Mindz alias, mid tempo off kilter techno breaks. Nice, but
one of those records that doesn't quite hold its own outside of a DJ set.
Reinforced is just one of those labels you just have to listen to before you
buy...
Knowledge magazine online (www.knowledgemag.o.uk) has a great review section
with audio samples...including the Alpha Omega & others... check the
upcoming London Electricity single feat. Robert Owens! Dope!
[3] For Paul...Ahhh...the local bar ghetto audio set-up...
You don't necessarily need a direct box, it just depends on your mixer and
the PA setup in the front room.
A direct box generally converts a line level signal (high impedance or
high-z) to a mic level signal (low impedance or low z) and vice versa. The
input is usually 1/4 inch mono and the output a 3 prong XLR (mic
cable)...they have been developed for use with bands for performance and
recording (ie so keyboard players can plug directly into the sound system
without using their own amp). Soundmen prefer this because XLR's are
balanced (grounded), durable and offer great analogue sound...they also
don't have to adjust the gain on their mixing board and plug right into the
snake. At $39 a DOD 265 is a good workhorse DI with enough options to make
it versatile. For stereo you need two.
So over long distances XLR cables offer the best sound quality...but
depending on your mixer and the PA, all of the adapters you might use to go
in between make the advantage nil. You might be better off just running a
good quality (gold plated...radio shack has 'em as cheap as they get) long
RCA cable...considering the juke box probably has the same kind of output.
[4] Favorite DJ request experiences...
R=various requestee DJ=me
scene 1
R: Can you play something with words?
DJ: Um...I'll see what I can do...
-DJ plays a song with vocals. Requestee appears again.
R: Can you play something with words?
DJ: I just did.
R: Could you play something I know?
-sound of dj ripping hair out.
scene 2
-DJ is playing a set of manic runnin' afrofunk drum and bass (ala ez-rollers
& london electricity)
R: Can you play something more upbeat?
DJ: [blank slightly menacing confused stare] -pause- What?
R: Can you play something more upbeat?
DJ: What do you mean?! This is as upbeat as it gets!
R: No upbeat..., you know like some hip-hop...
DJ: [blank stare]
-dj procedes to describe the history and dynamics of music while current
selection runs out...
scene 3
-anytime after the release of Daft Punk's "Around the World".
R: Can you play around the world or spin spin sugar?
DJ: I did last year, not this year.
Peace
