Dunno about the Fini Dolo record, as I've not heard a promo of it. It
should be in general release within a month or so.
About Swell Session:
I will say this, when Adam first posted the MP3 ages ago I was
skeptical, the bassline didn't do it for me right off the bat, and I
was not totally impressed with the beats either. But when the promo
came out, oh goodness..... It had evidently flown clear over my head
that the track is a serious builder. Playing it from end to end will
have most people singing the hook and shimmying.
The sparse horn work is beautiful, vocals fantastic, rhodes damn well
played. Every time I play the song out people *run* to the Dj booth
to find out what it is. Rare for me anyway.
The flip, "A Swell Session" has a similarly intoxicating build, and
really is a fantastic track in it's own right, but has been totally
overshadowed by "Music In Her Eyes" for me. I just haven't had the
chance to play it out, listen to it many times, etc...
It's got an excellent halftime beginning and a more analogue synthy
sound to it. Nice scat vocal chorus comes in about halfway in with
great synth accompaniment before (ready for it) the guitar solo comes
in.
Both cuts are "feel good" on the epic scale.
Huge props to Mr. Andreas Saag for seemingly popping out of nowhere
with a fantastically beautiful record to introduce himself with. I
hope we hear more from him.
About My Gitana:
This is the first record from People in a *long* time that I am have
not fallen instantly and totally in love with. Kinda makes me mad,
but I am really trying to like this release...
First impression is persisting - furious beats - really noisy trap
kit with loud conga and percussion. This cut is very much about the
drums, which I dig, but the lead bassline leaves me cold, and it
get's much much play in the track.
The second bassline is quite nice, however, and I've noticed that if
I start the cut halfway through I enjoy it much more, but there is
less to work with musically.
The other two mixes are variations on the first one. The first is a
"late-night" version, slowed down a bit, drums played splashier,
jazzier. There's a new bassline, less extreme. The other is
beats-only. Neither of these really do it for me :) oh well.
A couple to watch for out soon - not stuff I've heard mind you - just
records that should be hot:
DHJ - Shapeshifter (Archive) -new modaji business
Neroli Sampler (Neroli) -new label from Archive label boss Enrico.
New tracks from Domu, Stephan Attias, perhaps Seiji?
Jazzanova feat. Vikter Duplaix -dunno the track name, but lovely.
and of course, the new Opaque and Afronaught (Loqate) 12"s on Ubiquity.
cheers,
