Kevin,
Radio: 89.9 FM, KCRW! Specifically, 10am-noon is Nic Harcourt's "Morning
Becomes Eclectic," 8pm-10pm is Jason Bentley's "Metropolis" and 10pm to
midnight is Garth Trinidad's "Chocolate City." The rest of the time they
are a great NPR station.
Stores: Aron's Records (I forget the address, use la.yahoo.com or the
superpages.com) for one of the largest independent record stores in
LA. Melrose Ave has at least 4 vinyl retail establishments within walking
distance (Wax Records, Beatnonstop, DMC, and at least one more...) Higher
Source in Huntington Beach is good to stop at IF you'll be in Orange County
but it's a long way to go just to go vinyl hunting. I have to admit that
SF and NYC has much more and better vinyl shopping than LA...
Clubs: Go to anything that Bossa Nova! is promoting, especially if it's at
the Fais Do-Do Ballroom. Otherwise Louis XIV is usually excellent
(Mondays, I think), Bossa Nova! has a weekly that is in Santa Monica
somewhere...
If you want to check out the more underground kinda stuff, definitely use
the Socal-Raves calendar. http://www.socal-raves.org/calendar/ The
weeklies are listed at the bottom.
Don't forget the laweekly.com site for concert info. Also, if Elson's back
from Asia, definitely ask him. Or bother T-Bird and see if he's doing any
gigs while you're there. Anything Elson or T-Bird is up to is great fun in
my book :)
Gen (missing LA while freezing in NYC)
