Part of my personal bitterness over the Burn's series stems from my
deep involvement in the electric/spiritual/ecstatic jazz which
flourished in the early 70's before the juggernaught of fusion rolled
over most of the good stuff-- I even run a list dedicated exclusively
to it, called Kozmigroov. Erstwhile colleage Doug Watson sponsers
this excellent webpage dedicated to the stuff:
http://www.magma.ca/~dwatson/Kozmigroov.html
And here's listmember Ian Horst's excellent "A Love Supreme: Ian's
Guide to the Ecstatic Experience in Jazz":

Between the two of those, a pretty solid antidote to Burns/Crouch/Marsalis.
If after checking those pages out, k-groov sounds like something
you'd want in yr mailbox periodically (traffic ranges from
non-existent to heavy but short-lasting flurries-- it's kind of
schizo), then you can subscribe as follows:
Send e-mail to <kozmigroov-request@midheaven.com> or
<kozmigroov-digest-request@midheaven.com> with "[UN]SUBSCRIBE
<your@email.address>" in the BODY of the message.
Obviously the e-mail address w/"digest" in it is for the digest
version of the list, replace <your@email.address> w/your actual
e-mail address, & don't type in '[UN]SUBSCRIBE', pick one or the
other.
There are benefits to membership! Mainly, access to our mighty MP3 locker.
More on a thislisty subject, after the bloom had worn off the rose
w/the _Good Good_ & _Co-Operation_ comps (still like 'em a lot, mind,
but they're not longer the best thing since sliced bread) I wasn't
sure I needed to pick up the Bitasweet _Phuturistic Dancin'_ comp.
Boy am I glad I did, as so far it's my favorite of the shiki-shiki
comps (_Family Planning_ is finally in the mails to me after long
delays; got high hopes for that one, too).
