As I wrote earlier I use Ortofon Concordes (or bananas as I read) and I am
perfectly satisfied with it. Sure, I do have to lick them a lot, but that's
because all the other dumb ass djs are licking them at the radio where I
play and also at parties. In most of the places here djs take their own pick
ups to protect their records from the worn down pick ups that are usually
offered - if there are pick ups at all - on the turntable in the club you
play. So they just keep on licking and it realliy fucks up the contacts in
the tone arm as well and you have to lick it too to make it sound different
than a weak fart with no sub bass. Some extreme heads carry small bottles of
pure alcohol and q-tips, to clean the contacts with.
My other problem with Concordes is that they get run down after a few years.
That is, most of the dynamics and some high and mid frequencies go away and
even changing the needle doesn't improve the sound quality. It might be
because the huge magnet that drives the plate magnetizes (de-tunes) the pick
up which is an electro- magnetic device as well. I'ts just guessing and the
regular word of mouth dj tech bullshit, but to me it seems to be a quite OK
explanation. I don't even know whether it happens to other pick-ups as well,
but it has happened to other Concorde users I know.
However they are cheap enough to change them once in two years. You can
reduce the chance of having to throw your pick ups in the dustbin too soon
with keeping them away from magnetic and electro-magnetic radiation. (DON'T
PUT THEM ON TOP OF YOUR TV, NEAR COMPUTER SCREENS, ON THE SPEAKERS, IN YOUR
MICRO WAVE OVEN, BESIDE GIGANTIC 5 TON MAGNETS OR UNDER MECHA-GODZILLAS
TAIL!!!)
